[squawks like a parrot] Raark!
Yes really from the English via Spanish and Hindi
Pieces of eight, peso, p??sa, pesa.
No. Hindi pesa/paisā and Spanish peso appear to be unrelated. The Hindi word, instead, comes from Sanskrit pādá, meaning "foot" and being cognate with it (and with pedestrian and podologist, the former via Latin and the latter via Greek).
First currency introduced in 1890 was the Rupie a silver coin subdivided by 64 Pesa a copper coin. That where the sawhili word for coin came from.
