Useful Dutch TV shows for listening comprehension
I've been watching the special "summer school" or "university" programs of the Dutch daily TV show "De Wereld Draait Door", and I find them very useful for practicing Dutch listening comprehension. The orange letter T in the lower right hand of the video screen turns on the Dutch subtitles.
https://www.npo.nl/dwdd-university-presenteert/VARA_101293809?source=suggestion=dwdd%20uni (Hour-ish long, topics are more academic, like 'evolution' or 'the brain')
https://www.npo.nl/dwdd-summerschool/VARA_101379343 (30 min programs that are more pop culture, including a few about American topics)
They have regular daily shows too, but I find those to be too fast-paced for me (though if you're able to follow go for it!)
They're better suited for intermediate or advanced learners, but I think beginners might also use them to get used to the sound and flow of Dutch.
Hope you find them useful too!
Thank you so much! What other resources besides Duolingo have you used? I just started learning Dutch from scratch and in addition to Duolingo I'm using Mango and Assimil.
I don't think I know Mango, I'll check it out!
I went through the Duolingo tree, took a short in-person course from an organization that had their own textbook for beginners, and I've been using the Dutch wikibooks (https://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Dutch) and http://www.dutchgrammar.com to learn/clarify grammatical points. My boyfriend is Dutch, so I practice speaking and writing with him.
For reading comprehension, I bought 'Harry Potter en de Halfbloed Prins' from the iTunes store and have been slowly going through that :-D But it's hard going at first if you only have the Duolingo vocab, there's so many adjectives/adverbs and it's mostly written in simple past!
I've also been watching the farmer reality dating show 'Boer Zoekt Vrouw' (https://boerzoektvrouw.kro-ncrv.nl) but I don't know if it's great for learning Dutch since so much of the dialogue is aimless small (very, very small) talk. But it's the most popular show in the Netherlands, so I figured if I don't know anything about sports I might as well be up to date with 'Boer Zoekt Vrouw'!
I liked this episode: https://www.npo.nl/dwdd-summerschool/14-07-2016/VARA_101379347.
That one's fun! I've started using "een stukje" instead of "een beetje" around my (Dutch) boyfriend just to tease and annoy him, but now I'm afraid it's going to stick and I won't be able to stop!
I would also particularly recommend the first 1/2 of this episode about cows: https://www.npo.nl/dwdd-university-presenteert-de-koe-door-robert-kranenborg/06-06-2014/VARA_101362709 Though be warned that at around 25 min until around 28 min in they show a cow being slaughtered and the processes immediately afterwards.
If you need more fragments, the Belgium government made this site for foreigners learning Dutch https://www.nedbox.be/ . I do have to tell you that the pronunciation might sound a bit different to what you are used to on Duolingo (Can also be fun if you just want to hear the difference between the Dutch spoken in the Netherlands and Belgium :))
I should also note that in the first minute or so the host will speak really quickly about the program, but then the main speaker has a slower pace!
