Health Problem on iOS

I got on the Duo app last night, and noticed that I got the new health feature. (P.S. there was no update to the app when I saw health, so you'll get the health feature whether or not you update the app :-/ )

I did a few skills in German and lost some health (does it have to be every time you make a mistake? XD) but overall the feature wasn't too bad (yet).

I hopped on the app the next morning and I still had one bar of health, just like last night! I thought it was no biggie, and that I'd use some Gems (which are turning out to be pretty essential in the app) to get my health back quickly (I was in a time crunch and didn't have time to do lessons to get it back). It said I had full health on the health screen, but in the lesson it went back to one!

I hope that this doesn't happen again, especially since in the coming weeks I will be relying on the app!!!

Just curious about this

. . . to get my health back quickly (I was in a time crunch and didn't have time to do lessons to get it back).

Do the lessons that give health not also give xp?

I'm not sure, but I would assume so because it is just strengthening skills (I didn't end up doing the practice)

The only way to get health back is to practice in the "Health" section. That means that Duo tells you what to practice (rather than you completing a lesson on your own). If you complete Duo's practice session it will give you XP and one health bar. You would need to complete a new practice session for each bar of health you need to regain (up to 5), or you can just buy a full health status with gems. If you buy health with gems there doesn't seem to be a sliding scale based on how many bars you need - it is a flat rate for full health. Hope that helps!

This is interesting; what version of the app are you using?
Also, out of interest, do you still have lingots on the website? What is the conversion rate to gems on the app? (People have been reporting different rates of this, and saying the gems don't go very far.)

Version 5.0.19 (it just updated today to 5.0.20)

No lingots, just gems. The conversion rate seems to be 1.399730821 gems for every lingot (they should even out the rate in my opinion).

The gems don't go far at all!!! The bonus skills are 1000 gems each and a health refill is 350 gems.

Tip: don't buy the bonus skills on the app, do it online because it costs way too many gems on the app!!!

I have lingots on the website (so far), it says 1288, but did not have enough gems in the app to finish today's practice. So I had to go back to the website to finish what I wanted to complete today. This new health feature is annoying! It does not allow for different styles of learning. The gems don't go far at all, so true!

Thanks for the information. I've been mercifully spared DuoHealth so far, but I fear we shall all have it foisted upon us soon.
May I ask if you can still earn gems (without paying money) on the app (I'm sure I saw this mentioned in another discussion)? Are they awarded for streaks/completed skills like lingots? And is the number awarded commensurately higher to in any way compensate for this vast increase in price?

I thought I had accumulated enough lingots for any eventuality, but those new prices downright hyperinflationary.

Yes, you can accumulate gems in the app - for completing daily goals and for completing lessons. After you meet a daily goal, three treasure chests pop up and you get to pick one. You are then awarded a random amount of gems. I get anywhere from 1-30, though I have only gotten 30 twice (I saw someone post that they received 50 gems a few times, but it has yet to happen to me). Lately I seem to get about 3-10 per day. I received 120 gems for completing a lesson the other day. There are no gems for streaks like there are for lingots (i.e. 4 lingots for a 40 day streak).

I haven't seen a definite conversion rate between gems and lingots. I have more gems than lingots, but my lingots seem to go much farther than my gems would on the app. Streak freezes are cheaper with lingots, for example. But I cannot do a double or nothing with gems - only lingots (on the website).

Hope that helps! :)

En.Fugl described the system well. I think I have mostly collected 10 or 20 gems after finishing the daily goal (20xp is my goal). You can collect the reward only once a day, so those who work on several difficult languages at a time are going to have a hard time to avoid paying for extra gems to buy health, I think

Yes, this terrible system has been pushed onto me on the app. They are trying to force us to spend money.

My health always says full so I'm not sure what it's all about. I enjoy doing the lessons but the whole lingot/gem thing seems pointless. I have over 3000 gems when I use my ipad, if I use my phone I have 2900 lingots but that doesn't change. I don't get to earn anything on the phone and the ipad comes up with 3 treasure chests which always without fail have 9 gems in the left box, 11 in the middle and 10 in the right box so I obviously choose the middle but what for? There's nothing to spend it on, I can't even give the owl a new set of clothes anymore lol!
