Missing Audio On Irish Course
Just letting the audio tech's know that on a few parts where there should be audio on the course it isn't working. Some audio works and some is missing in a few places. Just thought you guy's should know.
Most courses on Duolingo use a commercial text to speech engine to read the text. That's not available for Irish, so under normal circumstances, there wouldn't be any audio at all available for Irish, but an exception was made and manual recordings were made for about a quarter of the sentences on the Irish course. This involves a manual process that is time-consuming and expensive and is prone to mismatches between the text and the audio (The TTS systems just read the text, so the text and the audio always match). All words in the course should occur at least once in a recording.
The bottom line is that there is no "missing audio", There are exercises without audio, and there are exercises with audio. That's not a bug, it's a design decision, a compromise between the available resources and the expense of manually creating and managing audio for almost 20,000 exercises.
It's not broken, and it's not likely to be fixed.
I'm following the Welsh course, and it's possible to 'hover' the cursor over words there to hear them again and/or to see more meanings. I've only done the first half dozen or so units in Irish, and I'm finding it more difficult because there's so little audio to practise with. Irish is quite 'alien' to me, so this lack of audio is going to slow me down.
I think I'm gonna pick a different language because the lack of audio on this course makes it to difficult to learn. I learn good by listening mostly.
I just picked Swedish and the audio is excellent. I can learn fast this way.
