Too hard to strengthen the lessons!
I just tried to strengthen my lessons and can't seem to get gold anymore. This is discouraging! Any one else having the same problem?
Yes! I am having the same problem. I think they changed the algorithm recently or something, because it takes me a LONG time to strengthen each one of them now. Even ones far back in my tree that used to take almost no time at all take a long time now
I agree, they must have changed the algorithm for strengthening. Of late, I usually need two or three strengthenings we one used to be enough before the change. Also, the skills get ungold much quicker. Actually, I gave up on following Duo's pattern and am now trying to find a rythm that suits me better. Otherwise it gets too frustrating.
Ignore it and rely on your personal assessment whether you know the stuff or not. The reason for this change is that duolingo is now funded by ads. And so they need to find ways to display more ads, by making it harder to keep everything gold and thus "motivating" the users to do more lessons.
You're right! I just was unhappy with the change. I don't see ads so it never occurred to me that might be a reason.
I wonder if it concerns everyone, or if we're just victims of some A/B testing. Let's hope that they don't keep it.
I used to have the same problem and was very frustrated about it. Also, I completely gave up on strengthening and only did new lessons. (I'm not learning from scratch but am revising languages I already know, so skipping the strenghtenings doesn't hurt so much).
After a while, I noticed that the algorithm had changed back to a rate that I can cope with. Now, one strenghtening usually is enough to get a skill gold again, and the skills again stay gold for a reasonable time. YEAH!
So it must be A/B testing, and they are still not done with it, as many people still seem have this problem.
Yes, same problem here! I worked hard for my trees (avg 500 XP per day). Learning three languages in both directions just make me feel learning, motivated by reaching some "goal". With 5 trees in gold I now get 15 new lessons per tree per day. This is impossible to accomplish and I will loose motivation and will not find a target to learn.
Yeah, having it turn to gold after strengthening a lesson was very rewarding. I like the above answers to just not pay attention to it, but that is why I like Duolingo, because it's like a game.
Being rewarding is one thing. Giving guidance is another. A few un-gold skills are a great guide to the areas that need practice the most. But with too many un-golden skills, this guidance is gone. If you know that there's no chance to revise them all, where do you start? It kind of left me lost.
I haven't tried in awhile, so I don't know if they have made it more difficult. I never have had a completely gold tree. Congrats on the 259 days thought :)
I don't have a control so I can't prove it makes a difference but what I've been doing is whenever I need to strengthen a skill after it turns gold I do it again my theory is that it gets the words which were close to changing and I can usually do it very quickly because my thought pattern is already focused on that skill.
I am having this problem and have been having this problem for close to a year. It's incredibly frustrating because it's hard to keep track of what I have done and what I haven't. There are some skills that I have repeated maybe 15 times and it still won't add a the one missing bar to become "gold". I have been doing around 10 skills per day and I am usually lucky to get a stengthen bar for maybe 2-3 out of the 10. The problem has been around for me for maybe a year but it's been much, much worse lately.
For me the problem is fairly new. Until a week ago, or so, I was able to keep most of my tree gold with a reasonable number of strengthenings. Not that a 'golden' tree really means a lot, but Duo offered some good guidance on what was most important to revise. No this guidance is gone. Since it's become impossible for me to keep the tree gold, I have to choose myself on which skills I want to work, which, I think, is less effective.
I used to strengthen the skills by clicking on the big strengthen skills button, but now I go to the individual skill and click on it, then click on the strengthen skill there. It seems to be working better. I do also see the ads now, except since I have adblock, I don't see the actual ad. Who knows how long they were there and I never noticed?
I have always done it by picking a skill that has decayed, and that's how I have been having problems. Both with the iphone app and the website on a laptop.
I have the same problem now >.< I'm somewhere around the 2/3rds of the eng > russian course, and I get more and more chapters per day to review. I've just had 4 courses yesterday losing their golden status, and 10 courses today, it's very discouraging. I'm still holding on, but I don't know if I will for a very long time.
You don' t have to strengthen the ungilded skills each day!
Maybe you like to give this method a try (it is my favourite)
Thank you very much for the article, it's very instructive on the way the algorithm works and how to make the best out of Duolingo :)
I know I don't have to have everything gold all the time, but I feel bad when I let some skills ungilded, like an unfinished homework. After the "10 skills in 24 hours" day it got better again, with 2-4 skills to review, so maybe I reached the end of a timer on some skills a few days ago, most of them were near the top of the tree, untouched for something like a month or two.
