Excited for Japanese~!

I simply cannot wait to learn more Japanese! I have been waiting for at least TWO years for a free opportunity like this! Is anyone else excited for Japanese to come to Duolingo?

You do realise it's very unlikely to come on Monday, right?

You could've also been using memrise for the last two years if you are so passionate.

Memrise isn't that useful by itself. It's great in conjunction with other language courses, but it's essentially just flashcards. I honestly doubt anyone in the history of ever has been able to learn anything by memorizing flashcards by themselves, especially something as complicated as Japanese.

I agree.

The estimated release date is actually the 18th, so it's supposed to come out one week from now. Unfortunately, it'll still probably take a bit longer than that.

Oh.

The people that are trying to hatch the language said so. And I haven't been able to memorize well because there are not teachers that I know of in my state and the websites that I look at are confusing.

The key word being said (past tense). The current estimate is Thursday which is still fairly soon.

Indeed! I've been testing it out on the alpha for a couple weeks now, and it's looking pretty good. I think you guys are going to enjoy it! However, I do have to warn you that the health system on iOS makes learning Japanese very difficult and time-consuming...

Does the course use Romaji as an optional input? I don't know much about Japanese :)

Down-voted once again for asking a legitimate question out of curiosity. Like I said I don't know much about Japanese, sorry for offending people.

You should be glad that it doesn't use romaji it is the most famous trap for beginners. It's like writing Korean in romaji - people will just think you are stupid.

It is complicated.

Actually the course does not use Romaji, it starts out by walking you through the basics of Hiragana and then intersperses some Katakana and Kanji as you go along. (I hope I'm not saying too much - DL told me not to get into specifics on the course as of yet).

You'll be completely lost in Japan if you learn only Roumaji, even if you know how to speak the language. At the very least you should learn Hiragana.

That's not what I asked or meant.

You could have bought genki 1 2 and learned way more in 2 years rather than wait for Japanese course. To each his own i guess. This was in no way intended to sound harsh, on the contrary i'm waiting for the course too, just wanted to see how it will turn out since it was in development so long.

I have only just started Duolingo a week or two ago so I did not know.

You'll benefit more from Genki.

You are not alone my friend. I'm SUPER excited about it. I took two years in high school and never finished learning. I'm really curious how they're going to teach the forms of writing (Hiragana, Katakana and Kanji), which is very similar to Chinese calligraphy.

Super excited for Mandarin as well. Hopefully that follows Japanese!!

It's not going to be released by then. Unless you want another half-butt done Swahili on your hands.

Actually the Japanese course already has TTS in place. Right now we're just testing for bugs.

https://www.duolingo.com/zekecoma

Okay. It has a good TTS. Still doesn't mean the course is not going to be crappy.

Many people are saying that it's too Engrishy.
