Portuguese gains new learners because of one song....

I will learn Portuguese. This beautiful song by Portuguese singer Salvador Sobral has convinced me. And clearly I'm not the only one. Other commenters on the music video say:

– "I'm seriously considering hopping on Duolingo and learning some Portuguese."

– "Portuguese language sounds like music already."

– "I will buy my tickets to go to Portugal next year!"

Art is powerful.

Enjoy listening to the song. The lyrics are shown in English and Portuguese side by side

Fantastic. A classical song, I wonder how far it will make it. Lot's of subjunctives by the way ;) 12 points from me, alone for the fact that he sings in his own language and not in English!

yes, it is stunning, and he sings it so beautifully. The lyrics were written by his sister!

classical?

Yes, I mean as opposed to pop song. How would you call this genre?

Small correction: it should be "what do you call this", not "how".

Your English is otherwise fine! :)

This is the kind of correction I need, thank you!

You're welcome!

(Another mistake that I sometimes see - not with what you've said, but related - is "How is it like?", instead of "How is it?" or "What is it like?")

it is classic. Classical is a genre (Mozart & Bach). Classic means it is solid, and not ruled by fashion, it never goes out of style.

Thanks for the correction!

Maybe I would call it a ballad?

Portofan, on your profile you ask to be corrected in English, are you not a native English speaker?

No, I am German. I wish people would correct me more :(

"english" should be capitalized on your profile :)

I am impressed! Bravo you!

One correction: Lots has no apostrophe. Unless you are talking about a lot (= a piece of land). For example: I will build a house on the lot's northern side. (apostrophy for the possessive).

As familiar as you are with Spanish (or at least as implied by your Immersion levels), Portuguese ought to be pretty quick to pick up.

Strong showing by the Dutch. I like the Maltese entry but I think that is an unpopular opinion.

CONGRATULATIONS on 1000 day streak today!!! Yes, I think you're right. For the past couple of months I've been crawling along in Russian. Very slow, but interesting. It bears almost no similarity to other languages I know. Oh yes, I miss immersion!

I don't like the song (sorry for having a dissenting opinion), does that mean I should unlearn Portuguese? :P

May 13, 2017

of course not! You should maybe write and sing your own song! I'd love to hear it! :-)

That's an unexpected reply, especially as it doesn't even seem like you ment it sarcastically. You sound like a nice person.

thank you!!! One of the things I learn on Duolingo – besides languages – is to appreciate everyone's ideas! Do you sing?

It won! Congrats Portugal! I feel ashamed that I placed this as my last song when it won Portugal's national selection but it grew a lot on me that it reached my Top 5. Also, here's Alexander Rybak's (ESC 2009 Winner) cover in English.

I first started learning it because of the Rio 2016 Olympics but after Salvador (and also Luísa's lovely duet in the encore) made getting up at 5am to watch Eurovision even more the worthwhile I might have to pick it up again :) Time to get strengthening!

Well done Portugal. My personal winner all the way. Am now trying to find simple guitar chords to sing it in Portugese. Thank you for mentioning this beautiful song. After the Italian tree, I know what to learn next.

I've started Portuguese course earlier this year, and today I've been studying more than usual because of that beautiful song, actually I've just reached level 11 a few minutes ago. I haven't finished the tree yet though.
