Have the recent updates to Duolingo ruined the experience for them?
I'm about half-way through the German curriculum and the recent updates make it impossible to stay on top of all of the units. I generally will do the timed sessions and have found that there seems to be less time (either it goes faster or does accrue as fast) and one needs to have more points accumulated in order for the unit to level up(i.e. return to gold). Is anyone else having this experience? It makes Duolingo a lot less fun and a lot more like work. I have a 552 day streak going so that provides some motivation but it's getting harder when my experience doesn't feel vary satisfying. Does anyone feel this way?
It seems to me that the new algorithm used to determine which skills to weaken and which words to offer during strengthening exercise is doing pretty good job in finding words that are slipping from my memory (or never made it into). Now it takes notably more effort to keep the tree gold (and, for example, I still can't re-guild my German tree since I can't spend that much time on it), but my purpose is not to keep the tree(s) gold, but to learn the language(s), so I'm ok with that. I never do timed sessions, btw, just strengthening individual skills and sometimes the general "Strengthen skills".
I also mostly do timed practice. I haven't noticed any change in additional time allotments or anything about the speed. It does stand to reason that with the recent algorithm change for a large chunk of users that it will require additional effort to get skills back to gold. This may to a certain extent level out over time as you work through the large one-time decrease in word strength resulting from the change.
All i see is messing up my current routine! I usually would start my practice repeating previous lessons, and duo would rotate it for me. Now it takes me back to first couple lessons every day! This new flashcards application i find absolutely useless... maybe it is just me... memorizing words without a context never made sense to me... for last month i pretty much make myself to open duo, i am actualy finding some youtube channels more useful and incouriging...
Thank you to everyone for their feedback. It's nice to see that I'm not alone in how I am experiencing Duolingo, but it is also interesting to see how others are experiencing Duolingo as well. This feedback has been valuable. I've tried just doing it on my iPad (where there is no timed option) and that seems to make me less frustrated, though I prefer the online experience prior to the update (at least as the update pertains to leveling up each unit, the rest has been good).
