How the mighty community of the green owl has fallen!

Where once was learning with fellow humans is now interaction with cold, heartless chatbots.

Where once was translation of the great works of literature is now the decoding of paltry, meaningless sentences.

Where lonely children could find refuge among a loving, accepting community is a place of malicious trolls with evil intent.

The green owl has forsaken us, leaving us with an iridescent feather, a memory of what wonderful things have been, and a tenuous claim of the better things to come.

Eloquently stated.
Let's hope the Owl is part phoenix.

Great writing, and so true. I remember when the activity removal was still a mysterious rumour, I saw someone say "if activity gets taken away, it won't take away the meaning of Duolingo." Well, sadly it has for me. I miss the nice comments from friends when I learned a skill. On some days when I didn't feel like learning, talking to people and seeing their progress encouraged me to go on. Even Discussion has lost its fun, with the increased spamming and downvoting. It's heartbreaking to see the website like this.

As Lrtward said, I sure hope Duo the Owl is "part phoenix" and can rise from the ashes soon enough.

Good job on your Sunday lessons! You can always come hang out in the Norwegian corner.

Thank you, Linn. :-) What corner is this?

My dear Sir Percy Blakeney,

I empathize with your lamentation immensely. As I have traversed these forsaken discussion threads, and those within strengthening practices, I have become increasingly disturbed with the horrors unveiled within the comments.

Duolingo, a child's learning site, has become a gathering place for perverts and trolls. A once-friendly community now has hazards which are worth censoring.

Although many (including myself) have tried to restore Duolingo to its former joy and peace, our attempts have failed.

I go now to resign myself to the cruel fate of the green fowl, in the hopes that a hero or moderator will rise against the new horrors which face each of us.

I was inspired by Lamentations 1:1 (NIV)

How deserted lies the city, once so full of people! How like a widow is she, who once was great among the nations! She who was queen among the provinces has now become a slave.

Yeah, I though as much. ;P

I'm taking it as a good omen that since the activity button hasn't been removed that something to replace it is on the horizon.

Jeg savner vennene mine.

Vi er her fortsatt, bare litt bortgjemt! :)

Jeg ønsker deg en veldig glad 17. mai!

Takk, jeg gleder meg!

Du får feire litt på din kant òg; sjampanje til frokost er lov.

I don't like to be the bearer of bad news, but the Activity button is removed in the new account code, and the code is being handed out right now. After we get it, we can only wait for Mr. von Ahn's "soon" to arrive.

But it seems there are still knowledgeable people around to teach me new stuff :D Thank you!

Thank YOU!

PS: I love your profile signature.

No no no, I insist, thank YOU! :D

I'm glad you love something I love! It's Serah's Theme ~Overseas version~ (clearly!) by Frances Maya and Masashi Hamauzu, from Final Fantasy XIII, my top played song of all time.

    Nice poem. It's very true.

Well put. I hope someone from Duolingo will read this and feel a pang of guilt, because many of us feel this way about the current state of the site. I just can't recognise it anymore. The tendency to shun social aspects of language learning is dubious, to say the least.

There is a large community of duolingoers using various Discord Chatrooms to communicate. Discord is a free instant messaging service that is very easy to use and can be accessed from any device. The Official Unofficial Duolingo Discord alone has about 850 users right now. Also if anyone is interested in language specific servers you can pm me on discord. You can find me on OUDD.

Well said, or rather, well written.
