La musique de la France

As we all know, translating lyrics is a great way to learn languages. I find that when I am not feeling very motivated about learning a language, the music of the language always draws me back. Here I am listing my favourite songs sung in France in hope that it may give you the motivation to keep on going when learning French gets tough.

First up: Dans les prison de Nantes It's very common to hear this at parties after everyone has has a little too much to drink. It's a folk song from Bretagne, depicting a prisoner who tricks the jailer's daughter into freeing him before he is sentanced to death. It's pretty tricky to sing since the sing quite fast but it is also so much fun to sing at a party.

L'aventurier - Indochine An 80's classic. Just listen to that funky guitar!

Cendrillon - Téléphone Another classic band from the 80's. Very popular in France. The lyrics are quite sad for this song.

Marche à l'ombre - Renaud Renaud is my favourite of the bunch. He can write the most beautiful heartfelt lyrics you've ever read and also the best protest songs. In this case, this song is a protest song. You can hear in on the streets being sung by the youth when they are protesting and the lyrics are fantastic.

Que serais-je sans toi? - Jean Ferrat A beautiful poem by the famous french poet Aragon turned into a beautiful song sung by Jean Ferrat. Jean Ferrat is known for having beautiful poetic lyrics.

Dans le Port D'Amsterdam - Jacques Brel What would a list like this be without Jacques Brel? Even though he's from Belgium, nevertheless he is regarded as the best singer in the French language

Mistral Gagnant - Renaud Lastly, this song by Renaud may be the most beautiful song I've ever had the pleasure of hearing. The lyrics talk about Renaud and his child walking together near the beach and how his child reminds him of himself. He talks about what his child means to him and how he sad about the fact that children grow up. Towards the end he says "Le temps est assassin et emporte avec lui les rires des enfants.." Time is an assassin who takes with him the laughter of children. This song is about growing up and how we wish we could be younger forever. I don't give this song justice, just read the lyrics for yourself ahah.

I really enjoy La Mer by Charles Trenet.

However, I much prefer the Kevin Kline version from the film, French Kiss. He sings it with a suave 60's crooner vibe.
