Nine more hours until the Japanese course is released (I hope.) Are you guys excited? Are you gonna try it out? I plan on learning Japanese at some stage in my life however it seems like too big of a challenge for me right now. I plan on learning French, German and Swedish first then I might take on some Japanese, but what are your thoughts about it?

There isn't a Japanese discussion page yet so I have to post it here, sorry if it bothers you guys :P

I think Japanese is amazing too. Duolingo is probably the most helpful language learning site in my opinion so it's amazing they're offering the course :D

I'm very, very excited! I've been waiting for Japanese to pop up on Duolingo since I started learning it a year and a half ago. I think it'll be a great way to improve my vocabulary, grammar, and writing ability and to prepare myself for my Japanese immersion programs in the summer.

Have they mentioned it's coming out at midnight GMT? If not, you'll need to wait another 17-21 hours on top of those 9.

Good point. I had forgot to think about other timezones, if i think about it now it will most likely come out at the PST midnight.

There's still no proof that it'll come out exactly when tomorrow arrives. It could come out in the afternoon, even in PST.

That's not my point. They don't release courses at a set time but if I had to choose one that's fairly close, I would go with midnight May 19th PKT (Pakistan)/YEKT (Yekaterinburg). That's during the working hours in Pittsburgh when somebody is there to pull the switch.

would they teach japanese font style as well ?

I don't really understand what you mean by "font style." What do you mean by it?

I think they mean the writing systems like katakana, hiragana, and kanji.

Ah. It's pretty much confirmed that they'll teach Hiragana, but I don't know about Katakana or Kanji. I hope they do teach Kanji since I was hoping to use the course to improve my Kanji knowledge.

By the way, if you want to learn Hiragana and/or Katakana, Duolingo has flashcard decks for them on TinyCards.

I've heard people talk about the course using katakana and teaching 80 kanji.

Only 80? That's kinda disappointing...

I guess that's the price we pay for having it developed in 3 months. It's also a reminder of the first rule of Duolingo: don't get your hopes up.

I keep going back and forth only because I don't see how I can use it in my life right now, but I do think it would be interesting.

I've been waiting for this for a long time! Haha, I don't know how I can squeeze it in with all the other languages I'm studying, but it will be fun to have and work on once in a while. Who knows? It may come earlier for some people as it may go live in an area with an earlier time zone.

It's exciting to me because I am considering learning Japanese for a fourth language after Gaelic, so I can talk with my friend who is learning Japanese and is very fluent. Cheers!
