Is it just me or has the skill decay been much harsher these days?

Earlier when I do strengthening of my skills, I only see 2 or 3 of them shedding gold. Sometimes even none. Now every time if log on to Duolingo, I see at least SIX decaying each day. Not to mention this has happened for all the languages I'm learning, so I'm forced to do like 18 a day. I am not a particularly free person to do these much exercises in a day, but if i don't I believe it will only multiply. Maybe not even multiply, it exponentiates.

I believe this isn't the case before. When I really didn't have time and only did just enough exercise to meet the streak goal, that will make 6 skills shed. But now, even if I try to do it earlier, as long as I didn't open duolingo for longer than 12 hours, I am greeted with a lot of gold loss.

I have schoolwork to do everyday, so I can't really use my phone from 8am to 6pm. That's not counting the sleep time. I only have a few hours to do my other works, which is obviously more than just learning languages from a site. I expected to learn languages as a habit, not as a daily task than exerts heavy pressure on me to continue streaks. I remember there being a "A/B test" on loosening the word strength, but this has started way after the announcement of it (for which I've also lost up to 15 skills per language and was truly demotivating). Is there yet another "A/B test" played on me?

Hmm. I've noticed that too. BTW, congratulations on your streak!

On one hand I'm also proud of my streak, but on the other hand it starts to feel like a burden on me. It's either the streak or the rapidly shedding skills, but all in all forcing users to do much more than they are able to is really counter-intuitive.

Yea I understand. I have been noticing the fast decaying to an even larger extent, like 8-10 per language a day, but I have a lot of free time after my school and early in the mornings to work on it. Also, I just really love practicing. I have heard many people talking about their streak like that, so i'll have to see when I get a bigger streak :) for now i'm enjoying it.

The skill decay algorithm lost all credibility for me when Basics 1 decayed in my Spanish tree, while many levels after it remained gold. I tested in a good chunk of the way through, I've passed the last checkpoint, and I'm approaching the end of the tree, so it's safe to say I don't need to repeat Basics 1!

I can't complain much because it's a free site, but that was when I stopped worrying about whether or not my skills were gold.

Eh? pressure to continue streaks? Are they holding you for ransom or something? Golden tree should signify that you know all the material - if you truly know it you should no longer care what some internet site thinks of you, if you dont then you shouldnt take offense that above mentioned site points it out.

Tip - strengthening skill on pc timed practice usually takes about 5 successful answers to make a skill golden again - so if you truly know the material about 20 minutes a day should be sufficient to maintain a language.

point is, i do most of my work on phone (on my way back home), and as far as i know, there are no timed practice on the phone.

maybe you're right tho, I focused on the skill tree maintaining part of this whole thing that it sorta took the learning part of my experience out of this site. Sometimes i can't help it tho, being a perfectionist.

streak is the gift of vanity that keeps giving - also lvl 25 is a nice round number.

This agrees with me as well... I just decided not to bother with whether they were all gold or not, just going at the pace I'm at, but when I can, I make 'em gold.

I've noticed it and I am pleased.

It seems they must be upgrading many things including adding many more word to some lessons.

Since you are learning words that you either haven't seen or haven't learned well enough I don't know why you are complaining.

Isn't learning words you aren't familiar with the reason you are here?

Well, not if every grammar skills drop at once when my most confident part of this whole language is the grammatical part. Things like Ir Future, Past Tense, Past Imperfect are the worse offenders, it only starts to get stale when I am asked to do it every 1-2 days.

I am otherwise perfectly ok with learning words that i may have forgot, but I rarely really feel that way in Spanish.

I'm having the same problem. It's almost impossible for me to progress as I am always having to go back and "strengthen" skills. I realize that some of the recently acquired skills should be strengthened, but I'm having to go back to basics 1 and basics 2 virtually every other day. I'm actually getting quite discouraged because as I add more skills, there will no time left in the day after I have strengthened almost countless skills to move to one I have not learned yet.

I'm having to go back to basics 1 and basics 2 virtually every other day

If the folks in Pittsburgh are letting this happen, take it as the sign that it is that skill color isn't something worth paying a whole lot of attention to! Unless, of course, it actually strikes you as sensible that a skill degilds, as you yourself know it needs more work.

I've also noticed that. The skills decay quite quickly, with at least three skills every day.

I have partly given up on that already. It still bothers me a little bit when I see it drop 1 percent again, but there's literally nothing i can do to raise it back once i've finished the tree, so there's that.

There seem to have been lots of threads about it for different languages, so something seems to be afoot, yes.
