A/B test blocking my downvote
Duo is apparently trying out blocking my ability to downvote in yet another exciting A/B test. So I am doing one too. I'm going to stop trying to answer posts and upvoting. So if you want to reach me try my Facebook link unless it's been eliminated as well
It is instructive to consider that all societies generally fall into two groups: those in which people can express both agreement and disagreement with popular ideas, and those in which only agreement is permitted. It would be a pity if the Duolingo forums became the latter kind of society; if it does, why not do away with replies to posts altogether and just have a mandatory 'like' button that we either press or lose all our health...
Situation is never black and white as you put it. When someone makes a nice post and receives -5 for no reason, that's not disagreement, it's just hate. And when that post disappears, you just took away the freedom of speech for someone. Have fun living in a world where that is allowed and excuse me if I won't be joining you.
It certainly isn't black and white; I was merely articulating the general principle:
Giving a large number of people a small amount of power is generally the best way to prevent a small number of people with a larger amount of power from misusing it. Occasionally trolls will downvote posts into invisibility with multiple accounts—they will abuse their rights; stripping everyone else of the same rights is not a solution to the problem. The people who abuse downvoting are always the minority and the majority mostly mitigates this when it is empowered to do so.
Don't worry about the good posts that are downvoted by trolls—if we are all denied downvotes they will be impossible to find anyway in a forum dominated by spam and irrelevancy. As it stands, people who have decent posts downvoted to oblivion can always repost them; 99% of the time the sensible majority prevails and upvotes good posts in greater numbers than a disruptive minority can downvote them in.
I doubt this is an A/B test.
If if it were, I would expect the downvote button to be hidden, not for it to have no effect.
Speculation: Perhaps the split is caused by whether 'you' are on the new or old site. I am on the old site and can no longer downvote. Does this agree with everyone else's observations? Is it old site uses cannot downvote and new site uses can?
Edit: to make things simple...
How to know if you are a user of the old web site or the new web site...
If your notification pop-up appears top-right, then you are an old site user.
If your notification pop-up appears in the center, then you are a new site user.
Do not decide based on whether you have an activity tab in the header, this would muddy the waters further.
So I read the post. Which has now apparently been removed I wonder if it was downvoted off or pulled by Duo. In either case, I'd like to note that I voted on every post I read since it's the easiest way to mark where I ended the time before. That means my upvoting was more than three times the number of downvoting I did. It's Duo's homefield they get to make the house rules but I can still pick up my marbles and go home. Without a doubt they anticipated losing users, the same way they did on removing immersion and activity. It's a business decision. Did anyone else get an offer for a weekend streak freeze for $0 .99?
Like piguy3, I can still open it. Although it did appear blank for me twice.
I might give the forums a break if things get worse ... perhaps returning whenever the replacement turns up. Though it seems they might just be updating what they have.
No idea about weekend streak freeze - that might be an Android thing. I have never seen one (I'm iOS).
It is possibly an A/B test or a glitch, because:
- in this account I can still both upvote and downvote
- in my other account I can neither upvote nor downvote since yesterday
.... I'm going to stop trying to answer posts and upvoting.......
Please, don't stop, because your posts are valuable.
Just try to make another account, that is able to upvote and downvote.
