Zulu Is Coming To Duolingo!

Everyone’s favorite language app is now teaching Swahili, Duolingo CEO Luis von Ahn announced on stage at the Design Indaba conference. Added to that, Zulu will be the next African language available, he told the cheering crowd in Cape Town.

Swahili launched on Friday (Mar.3) Ahn told Quartz. The launch date for the Zulu platform is not yet certain, but it is already in development he added.

I wasn't aware of this. There will be two African languages! I'm curious to how long until it is in the Incubator, but nevertheless I'm excited for it!

How cool! More African languages please

Please we also want IsiXhosa!!! This app is amazing and it could really add so much value to our country if we could all understand one another a little better

It’s been a year and no sign.

2021 and I'm still waiting!

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/PolMicheal

I'm hoping for Amharic but this is great news!

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/linguafiqari

So am I! Still, with each new ""major"" African language added, we get a little bit closer to having Amharic!

ተስፋዬን አልተወውም!

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/ConradTiedeman

Hopefully Somali and Hausa will be considered in the future.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/DaphneTheSnail

Yes! African languages are very interesting and the more of them the merrier.

When is Zulu coming!!!!

I was so excited to see this announcement...from two years ago...oh, I see. That's how it is.

Any chance of even an update on whether this is still a thing?

    When?!?!?!?!?!?!?

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/hackneyduo

That's cool. Zulu is making me remember Michael Caine in Rorke's Drift right now!

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/skinnebee

I've emailed duolingo twice in the past 3 years offering to help them develop IsiZulu but they have never responded

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Espiraden

    I know, I'm so excited!!
I'm happy that Duolingo is getting more African languages :)

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/DaveBoltman

The headline of that article says "You can now learn two of Africa’s most widely spoken languages on an app".

That was not true then (March 2017), and is still not true now (July 2018). You cannot learn two African languages on Duolingo.

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Blippie1

Still waiting for zulu and for swahili to be updated with audio and corrections!

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/AshBlankets

I would love to learn Zulu and Xhosa...I hope we get an update soon

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/JamesMunni

Maybe now, while the Black Lives Matter movement is so topical, it would be a good time to ask why there is only one African language on this platform. Duolingo needs to do better.

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/GrantMowat

    We want isiZulu! Please

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/lforbay

Seems as Africans we will have to create our own content and apps seeing this was posted over a year ago and still no Zulu.

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/naazim

    Vele Vele, seems so....

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/JuanitaMarita

Waiting for Zulu....when is it actually coming???

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Sesquinoctua

Has there been any progress on Zulu at all?

    [deactivated user]

It’s been more than 1 year.. is Zulu still being worked on? I’d love to learn it. It’s such a beautiful language.

Am I a joke to you?

      Still waiting for Zulu...

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/StaceyVoig1

I would purchase this app if Zulu was available. Loving the app.

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/JohnGB

I can understand delays in rolling Zulu out, but in the very least give us an update of what is happening. If things have changed, that's okay, but let us know.

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/skinnebee

It's 2020 and there's still no isiZulu in sight!

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/MsLMarvel

It's over three years later, and Duolingo has offered no updates.... ❤❤❤

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/AnthonyPat341861

Not to be a hater of the Green Owl company or its chairperson- now more than three years later, I think it's fair to say that this man has lied to us: "Everyone's favorite language app is now teaching Swahili, Duolingo CEO Luis von Ahn announced on stage at the Design Indaba conference. Added to that, Zulu will be the next African language available, he told the cheering crowd in Cape Town. There will be two African languages! ...May 19, 2017"

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/LukoWilzo

I was disappointed to see that Zulu wasn’t an option, nor any other African language despite Swahili. I saw this post and got very excited, but then even more disappointed when I saw that this was posted 3 years ago.

*Flashbacks even further to the Battle of Isandlwana*

        https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Hyllning

Thanks for this information! I can't wait to see it in the Incubator as well.

        [deactivated user]

PLEASE TELL ME WHEN ZULU IS COMING OUT!!! My friend told me I should learn this language, and it sounds really fun! Is the language really dying?

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/MalieP

About 10 million speakers, cf. wikipedia...so no I don't think it's dying! It is a wonderful language and I also can't wait to have it on DL. If anyone is working on it, keep up the good work! If it was showing up in the incubator I'm sure some people would be happy to contribute.

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/DaveBoltman

I think the statement about Zulu coming to DuoLingo is a marketing fairy-tale, that is not true back here in the real world.

Apart from that, DuoLingo is really great for other languages.

Still, one can dream. Please make Zulu real on DuoLingo.

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/ChrisSalmo4

Nope, the vast majority are zulu where i live. I really hope they do it, would love to learn

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Elgatobandido

Fantastic news, I hope we see several more African languages on Duolingo in the next couple years. But I really hope Swahili's problems and lack of audio are taken care of soon.

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/AlexinaLock

I am but a meager peasant at the foot of the mighty duolingo but perhaps Yoruba or Igbo?

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Kudu.

          yes please!

This is going to be so popular here.

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Liam101794

Fantastic! please keep me advised .!

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Shannon950711

:( I’ll keep on praying... hope it’s soon!

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/DaveBoltman

So far this has not reached us here in the real world. Would appreciate some feedback from DuoLingo, please???

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/GavinM93

          Really hope it's coming soon.

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Lidalee2

We are still waiting for Zulu in South Africa, please, Mr Von Ahn.

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/PhillipSnow

Still waiting for Zulu! It's been over two years...nini?

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/redrugs

still waiting fo zulu to come out

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/redrugs

If someone is interested, Memrise has an IsiXhosa course.

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Do_Good_Things

Is it decent or just flashcards like all the other lame platforms?

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Do_Good_Things

It's not even in the incubator. Lame.

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/AxelPutra

Didn't Luis tell us back on Reddit AMA there isn't any plan to add new African Language?

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/KwincyofKenya

Honestly I'm surprised there is no English to Arabic yet, especially considering WAY more countries and people speak Arabic. I'm not saying I want to learn Arabic, but I was just pointing that out...

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/DaphneTheSnail

I am extremely surprised by that too. I really hope it gets added one day because so many people want to learn it.

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/ChristopherDando

          couldn't come soon enough

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/naazim

Not sure if it is coming

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/BekahRraine

          Is this still a thing?

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/SamuelHamm14

I think it is really important to see more African languages available on Duolingo. Really excited for Zulu to become available

          https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Stenrico24

          Would love Zulu or Afrikaans
