Dutch to English translation problem - Grammar...

We might basically know: "geen" (Dutch) = "no/none" (English) ; "niet" (Dutch) = "not" gramma ;
and when Dutchmen want to say "I'm not xxx." (English) they will not say "ik ben niet xxx." (Dutch) in Dutch grammar, they will say "ik ben geen xxx." (Dutch)

When I do Dutch practice here: "Een krab is geen spin." and "ik ben geen banaan." My answers are "A crab is not spider." and "I am not banana." However, Duolingo said that i used the wrong word and gave me the answers are "A crab is no spider" and "I am no banana" by Duolingo. ha!

I wanna who's the Englishman will translate these tenses in English: "A crab is no spider" and "I am no banana"?? huh?!???

"I am not banana" and "A crab is not spider" aren't grammatically correct English sentences. However "I am no banana" and "A crab is no spider" are (although "I am not a banana" is a bit more formal IMO)

When translating geen, it means: not a/not an/no

  • Ik ben geen banaan - 'I am not a banana'/'I am no banana'
  • De krab is geen spin - 'The crab is no spider'/The crab is not a spider'

geen is used when there's niet+een.

that's so strange, in the tense "ik ben geen banaan". I have tried the 2nd time to answer "I am not a banana", and also I got it's wrong :(

Hmmm... that's strange. You might need to report it.

I'm not a banana is accepted. It's even the preferred answer, which you can see on the sentence discussion: https://www.duolingo.com/comment/9088706.

yes, i had already reported it twice. perhaps it's only a problem from my device... the moment I only can force myself to answer i am no banana, because I'm used to say I'm not...

I'm not a banana is accepted and the preferred answer https://www.duolingo.com/comment/9088706. However if you are convinced your answer should be accepted, please get a screenshot and post it here so it is clear what is going on.

And you're right - we can use geen or niet+een. :) thank you.

No problem. Although one possible correction, I think that you might be able to use niet+een in the sense of 'ik ben een banaan niet', but I'm pretty sure one should always use geen instead.

umm... But i just asked a Dutchman friend, he says 'ik ben een banaan niet' is an incorrect sentence in Dutch. They will only say ik ben niet een... or ik ben geen..., and they'll often say ik ben geen...

However i also feel so confuse, because I've ever seen the subtitle on their TV shows sometimes I saw 'niet' will be put at the end of a sentence....

I agree with your friend I just wasn't sure. Here's a link to stuff about geen and niet https://www.duolingo.com/comment/3734833/Grammar-niet-and-geen
