Does Duolingo measure my "strength" in any way? Or do those bars just go down with time?

If I don't practice, say, basics 1 for a day or two, I see that the bars go down to 4/5 then 3/5, etc. I would think that my getting the translations correct in other lessons halfway down the tree would demonstrate that I am 5/5 for "viro aux virino" and "mi estas knabo", but it seems like there's nothing I can do to keep that 'leaf' nice and golden other than specifically "strengthen skills" for that leaf - this is very tedious.

Also, when I click the "strengthen skills" button in the right-hand sidebar I am almost always practicing the very basics, unless that is already gold (5/5) then I get basics 2, and so on. I wish it would test me generally on all the skills I have learned so far - is there any way to do that?

The algorithm is a bit glitchy - all skills degrade over time, but the more often you do a skill the longer it takes - ( my basics now takes about a month to degrade) if you do strengthening in general it will revert to the content of the lowest non gold lesson on the tree. I almost never use general practice on the whole tree preferring to pick the harder topics and do specific strengthening or even re do the lessons.

I agree. I feel like I get a lot of practice with the very basics but other, more difficult concepts that I really need to practice don't come up unless I choose them. I have wondered the same thing.

I don't seem to get tested on the basics. I wonder if that has to do with my "testing out" at a high level when I first started.
