Uyghur course!

I've searched through the discussions and didn't find one proposing Uyghur as a new language on Duolingo, but I've noticed that there are some people here who are interested in learning it, so I'm posting this.

Uyghur is a turkic language closely related to Uzbek, spoken by 10 to 25 million people, mostly in Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region - which is about 27% of the Chinese territory! It uses an Arabic-derived wrighting system (it is an alphabet though, not an abjad, meaning it has both consonants and VOWELS~). It has several dialects, but the Central ones are spoken by 90% of the Uyghur-speaking population (or at least that's what wikipedia says).

If you are not convinced yet, listen to this boy: https://youtu.be/jqJwM7YamWg :)

I really would like to learn this language. Sounds interesting. It looks like a lot Turkish but with Arabic letters (like was Turkish before 1928) Nice idea !!!

I am from New Zealand and live in China, I meet Uyghurs everywhere - at school, the market, bars, and so on. I learnt a little of this interesting language and would love to know more! Thanks PootScoot: "that's ridiculous, i have never heard of the language, the only people that care are probably uyghurs and some Turks."

that's ridiculous, i have never heard of the language, the only people that care are probably uyghurs and some Turks. instead we should put an Ural-Altaic language, duolingo does not have 1 and should add one. like estonian or finnish (preferably finnish out of all of them.

    Quite an ignorant statement.

    >call me ignorant >your main language is a fake language, when did you meet a family in public that only speaks Esperanto, Latvian is more useful then Esperanto.

    Oh PootScoot.

My main language is German. Also, how does being level 8 in Esperanto make me ignorant? You should rather applaud learning. You've really just proven to me how ignorant you indeed are.

I have never met a Latvian family in public either. Also why make the stupid assumption? It really only serves to make you look bad, which doesn't take much. Fyi, I've never met a Romanian family in public either, so why learn Romanian? That's a silly argument, people can learn whatever they want. You also don't have to learn a language just to speak to people, you could learn a language simply because you enjoy it, I mean I doubt speaking to people is a great concern of yours.

It's actually hilarious to me how I said your statement is ignorant, which it is, and all you could do was discredit Esperanto and somehow learning Esperanto makes one ignorant.

You're still ignorant, maybe even more now, but it's okay William, I understand.

Your literally the most obnoxious person I have ever met on the internet, first off i was saying Latvian was a useless language because nobody really speaks it, it has all been flushed out by Russian. Also your bio says you live in South Africa, which is a kind of nice country, but i think a family is more likely to move to america or the UK or a nearby country that's nicer like Poland or France. Esperanto was invented with a good purpose to help people speak to each other easier in a town in the Austria-Hungarian Empire, but now its just this stupid useless globalist garbage language that's actually useless, its literally spoken at Esperanto conventions and pretty much nowhere else. And you know "applauding learning?" there are so many other more useful languages, or maybe since your a native Afrikaans speaker you could work on an Afrikaans course, stop whining and go back to tumblr you pink haired thot.

Your literally the most obnoxious person I have ever met on the internet

You don't do a lot of internet, do you?

first off i was saying Latvian was a useless language because nobody really speaks it, it has all been flushed out by Russian

While it's certainly true that Russian is an important language to know in Latvia, it's still a minority language. Latvian is the sole official language, all school students have to learn Latvian, Latvian is the largest language and ethnic group, and any languages other than Latvian, Latgalian, and Livonian are considered foreign.

Also your bio says you live in South Africa, which is a kind of nice country, but i think a family is more likely to move to america or the UK or a nearby country that's nicer like Poland or France.

This is unnecessary and serves no purpose.

Esperanto was invented with a good purpose to help people speak to each other easier in a town in the Austria-Hungarian Empire

In 1887, when Unua Libro was first published, Bialystok was part of the Russian Empire. Zamenhof's father was a censor for the Czarist government.

but now its just this stupid useless globalist garbage language that's actually useless, its literally spoken at Esperanto conventions and pretty much nowhere else.

And you know "applauding learning?" there are so many other more useful languages

Why are you learning Romanian instead of Mandarin or Spanish or French or Japanese or Cantonese or German or Tamil or Bengali or Arabic or Hindi or Swahili? Those are really useful languages. Romanian is so useless, ugh. /sarcasm

or maybe since your a native Afrikaans speaker you could work on an Afrikaans course

You have no idea how hard it is to get a course set up.

stop whining and go back to tumblr you pink haired thot.

I'd like to note here that you've broken most of Duolingo's guidelines in this post alone. You may want to stop now.

Seriously, saying Lativan is a useless language? It's not people go there and maybe want to learn some of it before they go there, don't make comments like that.

your main language is a fake language, when did you meet a family in public that only speaks Esperanto

Define "language" and you'll find that Esperanto meets every requirement. It's not fake in any way.

There are actually several thousand families who speak Esperanto and two million or so second-language speakers - funnily, more than Latvian. Additionally, these Latvian speakers are centered in, well, Lativa; there are only 100 000 Latvian speakers elsewhere. Esperanto is spoken everywhere on Earth.

You are about ten to twenty times more likely to find an Esperanto speaker than a Latvian speaker.

By similar logic, you're more likely to run into an Esperanto speaker than a Romanian speaker.

    Now don't be ignorant.

i used Latvian to make a point, it is an almost useless language

    May 25, 2017

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Zerr_

I've studied Latvian in the past and there's no "useless" about it. It's actually really interesting, particularly if you want to go to Latvia.

I am Latvian myself and it's not a useless language...

    No language is useless.

Altaic includes Turkic languages, so Uyghur would meet your requirements. But ignoring that, we already have a Uralic language (Hungarian) and an Altaic language (Turkish). Still, I would love to see Finnish here.

    May 23, 2017

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Zerr_

The Altaic language family was a linguistic theory that no longer holds up and is dicredited by modern linguists. There is no modern evidence that Turkic, Uralic, Tungisic, Mongolic, Koreanic, and Japonic language families are closely related.

    May 25, 2017

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/piguy3

The notion of a "Ural-Altaic" language family has been widely discredited for half a century.

    May 23, 2017

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/SeptimusBones

Oh, the amount of logical problems in this comment... and "Ural-Altaic", oh geezus, that's not a thing. "Uralic" or "Finno-Ugric" or "Finnic", depending on how broad you want to be. Estonian and Finnish are close enough to be both under all three (out of which "Finnic" is the least broad).
