In English a baleen whale is just one variety, right?

Yup! It refers to large filter feeding whales that have baleen "teeth" that are large and good at filtering out small krill or shrimps out from the ocean water. They take in large mouthfuls of water and push the water out of their mouths keeping only the yummy krill and any other small fish that may get caught up in their baleens too.

extra fact: The baleens are also where the "bones" from old corsets come from because they are both sturdy and flexible enough to give shape to corsets.
