I have only learned the suggested answer form, but the characters do not exist as answers.

What am I supposed to be putting here?

Oh, I think I see. リ = り and DuoLingo is just swapping them in the same question.

It's just the cursive version of り. This is why learning the stroke order is important. These symbols are interchangable for those familiar with them. Knowing the stroke order is important for reading fonts like this and handwritten Japanese.

Note that is it often written this way to avoid confusion between り and い.

り and リ aren't the same character - they both transliterate to "ri" however the first one is a Hiragana and the second one is a Katakana. り is usually handwritten with 2 separate strokes but still in a more cursive way than リ.
