Question about Bots

As I do not own any gadgets whose names begin with the lower case “i,” I have no access to Duolingo’s Chat Bots. Does anyone know of a comparable technology out there that may be suitable for conversational practice in languages other than English? Thanks in advance for any recommendations you may offer.

The Memrise app has something similar (for some of their official courses).

I recommend forgetting about chat bots you're not missing out on anything. Well, we're all are missing out on the good features that Duolingo got rid of and then implemented chat bots. But I mean you're not missing out on anything by not having access to chat bots. You could have a more interesting and useful conversation with Google Translate than you could have with a Duo Bot XD

A Chat Bot is an AI program that attempts to mimic the way a human person may carry on a conversation. The extent to which the program is successful is measured by the so-called Touring test, in which a panel of judges has to decide which respondent is human and which is a robot. Very few programs have come close to this Holy Grail of AI. When augmented with voice recognition, such a program would be a true breakthrough in the field of second language acquisition, because it will fill the gap between free or almost free platforms, such as Duolingo, and University-level second language programs that may cost thousands. What you get for the extra $$$ is a live person with whom you can talk and receive an instant feedback. A good Chat Bot would do the same, except much more economically. In fact, I wouldn’t be too surprised if this turned out to be the reason why good Chat Bots are so hard to find. This may sound like a conspiracy theory, but there are obviously a lot of people out there who really don’t want Chat Bots to be widely available.

By the way, Google Translate is just that - a translator, and a pretty lousy one to boot. If you are having a conversation with it, you are having a conversation with yourself.

I at least have found conversations with myself to have much greater learning value than my attempts to use the Portuguese chatbot :)

From two days ago:

– Would you like to buy dresses, shoes, or pants? (bot)

– I'm looking for pants for my daughter (me)

– What color dress do you want? (bot)
