I once tried translating "I don't want war" through about 10 languages and it came back as "I want war"... don't trust it.

Weird what effect removing one comma can have^^

Yes, changing "auch" to "auch genannt" also makes the translation much better! And "Volkswirtschaft" alone is correctly translated as "national economy", but "Die Volkswirtschaft" not! Very mysterious.

Die Wege von Google Translate sind unergründlich. Thanks for posting ;)

So the effectiveness of the machine still depends on the human.

Good.

I have found Google Translate to be very helpful in my learning Spanish.

Yes, I don't think it's that bad, in fact it often does an amazing job, but this example was just so funny.

A more reliable translation service is SpanishDict. It is (as you can see from the example) more reliable than Google Translate.

the example above isn't very good. You don't judge MT's ability to handle language X by its ability to handle language Y, that's just silly.

Try Yandex Translate. In some cases it can be more accurate than Google's one.

This phrase is indeed better on yandex. Thanks for the tip!

Go Google Translate! :P Very insightful.

What fun! :D

I admit that I do use it to look up individual words instead of consulting dictionaries sometimes because its convenient.

Google Translate + Amharic = Hilarious

Here are some translations I've encountered using it:

ያልገባኝ ነገር (The thing I don't understand) -> "Math"

ጠፋህ (You disappeared[/You were inactive]) -> "Grapegatherers"

አልተኛሁም (I haven't slept) -> "Asleep"

There have been many others but I can't remember them.

Ausgezeichnet!

That's not Google Translate - That's just German; It happens to me as well :D.

This is typically something which should be reported to Google Translate.

I'm assuming English isn't your first language. You speak it great

German has a few words that can't be translated into English. Same goes for English and other languages. Google Translate can be a real serious issue if you are talking to a foreigner so don't trust it.
