How many times do I have to strengthen Basics 1?

I've been doing duolingo french from english for a few weeks. I'm getting thoroughly fed up of strengthening Basics 1 (and other low level skills). (I must have done it 10-20 times by now.) I did french at school. I'm never going to forget that un garcon is a boy. I'm starting to ignore the decay of these skills. Is this the best approach? Any advice? Thanks.

You'll practise those skills as you progress through other lessons. Even if they do begin to decay, if you're confident that you will not forget the words' meanings and do not make mistakes with them whilst practising other levels of the language, there is no need to go over them.

It never stops decaying, but if you strengthen skills farther along the tree, it can strengthen other skills as well. Also, if you feel like you don't need to practice that, you might as well stop strengthening it.

Practice where you think you need it the most. That's more important than some arbitrary script telling you it's time.

Thanks for comments. I'm now doing what is suggested, i.e. ignoring decaying skills. Of course it would be more useful and satisfying if the software kept track of what I needed to practice and rewarded repeated error-free strengthening sessions.

Duolingo uses a Spaced Repitition training algorithm. As you gain more lessons the older ones will stick on gold better. Personally I would work with Duo's algorithm and strengthen the lessons that fall out of gold. Those are the ones that the computer things it's time for you to strengthen. You don't have to strengthen all that fall out of gold. I'm a few days away from the end of the tree and the other day seven buttons fell out. Just decide in advance that you'll strengthen 2-3 back to gold each time you practice and then move on with your normal lessons.

My experience seems to be more than the Spaced Repetition causing Basic 1 and Basic 2 to decay. It seems that when I miss a sentence in a latter lesson or strengthening exercise that contains a word from Basic 1 or 2, those words decay faster, not just the one I missed.

This seems to have become a problem for me about a month ago. Basic 1 and 2 used to stay gold, now they drop to four bars even if I strengthened them the previous day. Maybe I'm just in the wrong part of an A/B group?

That would be terribly frustrating if you want to keep things gold. You probably have a LOT of experience with them by now though. :) I suspect I'd just end up ignoring them.

Good luck with it.

Here's a tip: Use the bigtest link. I was bored of redoing some lessons, so I just breezed through bigtest2 and everything went back to 5/5

Thanks, that's what I was looking for. Although I had to search to find the URLs for the big tests "https://www.duolingo.com/bigtest/fr/0", "https://www.duolingo.com/bigtest/fr/1", etc. I can't see these links from my normal duolingo page.

It's very anoying when you have to strengthen any skills, but i just keep going and as you finish some skils some times it says you've strengthen some skils.
