New Update Has Destroyed Duolingo

The health bar system, gems and restricted learning. Duolingo was (before today) an extremely fun way to learn languages. Unrestricted learning at your own pace with a few understandable ads here and there. Now it not worth my time. The decision to put through this new update with the health bar system is ridiculous and in no way promotes the learning of a language. I understand the need to create revenue, but why not charge a yearly subscription? Anything but the outrageous system that has been introduced with the health bars and gems. I will no longer be using Duolingo or be recommending it to anyone in the future. I'm switching to Babbel until the creators come to their senses and undo the horrible changes to this app.

Duolingo is going down the hole. flashback Last year was the final days of immersion. It was super fun AND gave me 1000s of XP. Then (due to server problems) they removed immersion (the removal announcement has -1000 votes and has been deleted)!! I was super mad at Luis' choice to remove the XP giver. Now they remove the activity streams!!! What's next, the words bar? Discussion? LESSONS?!? I have no reason to do Duolingo anymore. I am struggling to find a reason to stay. The only reason I can think of to stay is to wait for Duo to come to it's senses and get all of these amazing (though non-existent) tools back.

Just think about what they'll do with the website. Sure it's been 5 months, but maybe they will. I saw a post a long time ago that said they will add new avatars. Certainly not better than immersion :(((((

I wouldn't choose new avatars over Immersion. Skins? (I.e., macOS's Dark Mode, typing.com's interface skins, etc.) Yes. Avatars? No.

Immersion was removed because it was a drain on resources, while only being used by 0.5% of users. It's expensive to maintain features in software and if users aren't using a feature, it makes financial sense to get rid of it. I miss immersion too, as it was interesting and challenging to do the translation, plus you got good feedback when your translations were corrected. But I understand why it had to go. My only real gripe right now is the introduction of crowns. I find them to be a much poorer way to learn than the previous experience of trying to keep my tree gold by practicing everything that needed re-golding.

Agreed! Duolingo converted 915 lingots, which took me years to earn, into 1400 gems. A streak freeze which before cost 10 lingots now costs 400 gems or almost 1/3 of my earned gems. I said it elsewhere before: the ads following each lesson were just the beginning. It will only get worse, because once ads are introduced, it will not be possible to resist the temptation to increase their number and frequency. It is probably time to say a sad goodbye to Duolingo and look for alternatives that put education ahead of commerce. Perhaps the solution is to create an alternative.

If anything good comes out from these changes, it's that some people might switch from the app to the web version. Luis did say that they have no plans to introduce these ridiculous systems to the online version, but I'll just make an inb4 that turns out to be a lie. Well, let's hope it won't.

It does seem a shame. I had 10,000 lingots and to see them disappear was sad. I know it takes a time to get used to change, but I was surprised to see the option to buy gems. For people starting out with Duolingo, especially the younger ones, this does not seem a fair way of getting them and could lead to far too much being spent. I know you can earn them in other ways, but it does take patience and commitment. I preferred the old style of Duolingo, and although I won't leave in a hurry, the caring feeling and the support of learning a new language seems to be being lost in what could easily become another gaming type app.

Fortunately, the web app hasn't changed, so I haven't seen the new setup. What you describe, though, sounds as if it penalizes folks with disabilities—dyslexia, MS, etc. If the web app changes to this, I'll probably have to leave Duolingo.

Duo probably has more in-house developers for iOS than Android. With that in mind, they're able to develop, update, and test more features for that platform over the others more frequently. At least that's my take on it all.

A massive disappointment indeed! A wonderful educational tool has been totally destroyed. An unwanted, forced conversion from Lingots to Gems is authoritarian, morally bankrupt and pedagogically a very poor choice. I have been a long-time student, but am hereby sadly leaving. If a revenue-stream is required, make it optional. People who can afford it, will gladly donate within their means. This new update, however is harsh and mean-spirited. Please reconsider.

I escaped in the nick of time! Today I finished my Spanish tree!! When I started DuoLingo last New Year's Day, I set my daily goal at 20XP and I decided that I would study that much new material each day. In addition, I strengthened any weak skills over and above my basic 20XP. Typically, there might be at most three or four skills needing strengthening each day. A while back, about the time they started running ads (coincidence? I'm thinking not!) I woke up one day to find that there were twentysomething skills that suddenly needed strengthening. And every day since then there have been a dozen or more newly weakened skills appearing thoughout the day that I have had to contend with. Every day I found myself doing 150 - 200+ XP -- just to keep even! I can understand that skills will weaken over time; but some of these skills (Politics especially comes to mind) would come up AT LEAST EVERY OTHER DAY, and sometimes DAILY or even TWICE A DAY. Really???????? That's nonsense! DuoLingo was consuming my life. Now that my tree is complete, I'm going back to precisely 20XP each day (involving skills of MY OWN CHOOSING, not that of some silly algorithm) and reclaiming my life. And I don't give a flying fig what colors my golden tree turns.

I was disappointed to see my 7137 Lingots turned to 7600 gems, because I was trying to reach 10000 Lingots. However, I'm a Lingot hoarder and I have yet to fully understand the impact. Duolingo has made a lot of changes over the years and hopefully in time I'll adjust to this one too.

I really hope that they see that more people dislike the app more than they like it and they will change it. I understand that they want to make some changes. But the reason people use this website/app so much is that there are no restrictions. To me, it's like a game. I do the lessons, I get more XP, and I'm learning without it being a pain. But now if I mess up, I'm being punished for it. The gem thing just... It doesn't make any sense. Why would you change something that isn't flawed? And like the comments above, some people had HUNDREDS of Lingots and they were just lost. It was a waste of time for them and they clearly worked very hard to achieve that. It's making me not want to use the app anymore. I have a computer, but it runs very slowly and I probably will have to use the app. If they at least removed the five lives things, I would be happy. But it's infuriating trying to use the new version. I really hope they listen to us, otherwise, they are going to lose a lot of money and users.

https://www.duolingo.com/Jabb

I don't really understand this complaint. You don't need to buy streak freezes or health refills.

  1. Stop caring about streaks - it doesn't matter. Just learn when you can and if you miss a day, no big deal, start a new streak.

  2. Use practice sessions to earn health back - if you're losing all your health bars you're probably going too fast anyway. So slow down and practice your existing knowledge before trying to start new ones.

The only thing you need gems for is the bonus skills - and there are only a couple available, so it's easy enough to earn gems by doing the normal lessons to buy the bonus skills. Remember that you're doing this to learn a language, not to "get to the end".

I AGREE! As an educated, older adult student, I used to recommend DL to loads of people... Now I suspect they'll be after my head, esp the educators! SImple, used to be... Fun...used to be, Learn, used to... I am sorry because something once great is gone...now a "used to be..." It'll only be spoken about in past tense. I am actively searching for a new language app to replace DL, can anyone recommend one? Why oh why does this "new" allow one to advance...spend 200 gems to test out, it takes them away if you pass or fail....what's the reward? It's all about dollars...

I'm actually using MemRise to strengthen my JavaScript, but that one's usefulness is very much dependent on whoever created a particular course, and I haven't yet tried any of the official releases. I may also use them to relearn some ASL, since I have a friend who's losing her hearing.

I haven't tested ClozeMaster or Busuu yet, but they have languages Duolingo doesn't offer. (Arabic and Mandarin are on my want-to-learn list.)

I totally agree. It ruins the game. Especially for those who started out Duolingo without that retarded system. And for languages with very precise grammar like German or any other language, one tiny mistake can lock you out of a the whole language course for literally HOURS. Yes you can practice for 1+ heart but I shouldn't have to be punished or force to go over material I already know to progress in the language.

Cheers to the Babbel reccomendation. I will also give Memrise some love too. Screw this system

I agree, though I suppose somehow Duolingo has to be paid and they are trying to monetise trough this awful way. Primarely, they made money thanks to translations. It seems its not enough. By the way, being profitable and sustainable is a necesary way to increase investment in the company and in the long run it should impact positevely in us learners. Luckily, web version still remains the same. I need to clear out that health bar changes affects me as well.

I agree (and pay for duolingo plus). I like the health system much better than these levels which I don't have a clues what they are for. With the update came a lot of premature exercises. 'plane' is not accepted anymore, it has to be an 'airplane'. And so on..

You’re dead right! The new system seemed to me soul-destroying, but it seems the Android version doesn’t require you to constantly revise tedious basics in order to get enough “health” to attempt a new skill. It also doesn’t kick you out if your answer isn’t word-for-word the same as their preferred version. Only the Apple version seems designed to piss learners off.

The app has removed the health bar system. As I was neutral to the whole issue, it doesn't affect me. But one thing certainly stands out is the resistance to change in the masses. The same trend that is shifting the world towards things like Brexit and Trump to name a few. Another striking feature is the demographic that seems to be consistent in such matters. The world keeps amazing me.

https://www.duolingo.com/Taiyeb2

Dear friend, try to look at the positives. The health bar can be easily filled with practice ( +1 for each practice session ). It is a good opportunity to practice the previous exercises as we get lazy when it comes to revision. It will take approx 5 minutes for a practice session. Come on try it :)
