Why can't I put umlauts into my username?

I was going to put ü, ä, ö and ß but it wouldn't accept it.

Why?

Probably because your username is part of the URL of your profile, and URLs normally can't include Umlauts.

(Although I recently came across a website which had the Swedish å in its URL -- the corresponding URL with an a took me to a different website -- I have no idea how they've done that.)

You can have all kind of special characters in a URL, e.g. using Unicode like %... notation for it. For example I used it to query Russian verbs (so with Russian characters) on http://verbix.com.
