Introducing Gems! The new way to get people like me riled up.

Seriously, Duo. The new update couldn't have been more badly timed. First, the fire was just cooling from Activity being removed, and secondly, the update made it so that you basically had nothing to do for 2 hours but to strengthen "Basics 1" for the twentieth time. What's more, the gems system is ridiculously broken, as people who have spent all their time on Duo holding onto their Lingots just lost years of accumulation. Thankfully the update didn't come to the website, or else those people would have really wasted years of their life. In short, the update, in my opinion, is the worst thing that could have happened to Duolingo, partly because of its content and its timing.

Absolutely agreed. As we all know, Duo's primary purpose is the acquisition of virtual currency. If someone loses all their lingots, what does it matter if they've acquired a variety of language skills over that time?

The fact that I can now talk to millions more people than I could years ago is nothing compared to the vast fortune in lingots I've amassed!

Agreed again. Next time, just remove all the courses and give us a button to press for lingots. We don't need the distractions.

You know, some people would accuse you of hyperbole. I'd like you to know that I would never do that.

Your Duolingutopia just needs one more feature to achieve perfection: the ability to spend the lingots on arbitrary-length streak freezes. Then, having power-clicked my way to 10,000,000 lingots, I will be able to spend some of them on a ten-year streak freeze. Then I can safely ignore Duolingo for a decade and come back in 2027 to bask in my glorious, well-earned, 3650-day streak.

Let's not forget the 'glorious' attempt to 'regulate' the Lingot-System (the 'economics'). I've been ripped off Lingot for weeks(*) just for keeping my streak.

(*) This little stupid 'test' which has been dropped.

I know. Why duolingo? I hate gems.

Sorry, I mean really don't like gems.

It's definitely a violation to hate a person or class of people. I'm not sure gems are afforded that same protection ;)

I have two accounts. One that has gems (not this one.) One without (this one)

Well I am just glad that my 'wasted years' included becoming fluent in a language that I couldn't even say hello in when I started off. Imagine if I looked back to realise that all I had done was amass a load of points I couldn't actually do anything with? Now that would be a waste of my life!

Use the desktop instead. It's way better. It's not garbage like the mobile app.

If it ever comes to the desktop. I'll never use it again.
