But Duolingo isn't a democratic organisation. We will get whatever methods the powers to be, at Duo, consider is the best system for our language education.

I have just started using the Gems system and personally I quite like them. Of course there are some glitches to be ironed out, like the recent increase of the rate of weakening skills but generally it is a good idea to slow down the rate of cramming.

Is the increased rate of weakening skills really a glitch? I ask because if the intention of health (another new introduction) is to slow down progress to make people do more revision, then wouldn't an increased rate of weakening skills complement that? Could it be intentional?

I know, my questions are mostly speculative and therefore largely rhetorical (or something like that). (Unless there has been a statement one way or the other?)

Anyway, I, for one, welcome our new Gem overlords.

[Edit: Oh, hey, I found the post from 9 hours ago that this one by BonBonChat is probably partially in response to. For anyone else who hasn't read the official Gems and Health FAQ: https://www.duolingo.com/comment/22874501 ]

I agree, but another way of looking at the increased rate of skills weakening problem is that it could also be a means of increasing sales of Gems and that has somewhat darker motives which I would rather not think about.

PS thanks for BonBonChat's link. That is very very useful.
