Duolingo is the most popular way to learn languages in the world. Best of all, it's 100% free!

This course is too difficult!

So, I love Duolingo, I find it to be rather comprehensive, and I study multiple languages using it. However, I find the Russian course absolutely intolerable! For the record, I'm intermediate fluency in Russian, so I understand a lot of the grammar points and can speak basic conversation fluently. But my problems with the course are not about its ability to challenge me with new vocabulary, etc, but the course's unforgiving and inflexible nature.

  1. The voice of the audio files I feel is very unclear in certain spots, especially in those "copy what you hear" exercises.

  2. My main problem is that it's too hard. Not in the sense that it's a challenge. I'll write down an Russian translation, enter it, and it will not recognize my answer because I didn't use the EXACT wording it wants. (ex. I put in кушать instead of есть and told me I was wrong. It's the same verb!)

It gets to the point where I'm not really learning anything from it, and I have to literally copy and paste the exact answers it wants, just so I can finally get through the lesson. It's not fun when all I do is copy things, and I'm certainly not learning anything new.

I'm a total beginner so the first few lessons are "ok" and precisely at my level. I only know the words taught in the course so I can never enter any synonyms by mistake...

  1. It's synthetic. The course developers are well aware that it is far from perfect, but it's what we have to make due with. Maybe in the future we well get properly recorded Russian male and/or female voices, but as far as I know this is concerns the resposibilities of the main Duolingo staff.

  2. Then it's not too hard; you're just too good. If you feel that the translation could get some more options or improvement there's a report button where you can scribble down your two cents and the team will evaluate.

One possible workaround would be to use the 'app' version instead of the web version, because there many words are already pre-programmed present, so less possible typing, so less possible choices to go wrong.

Thus already hard coded responses in most (but not all) possible answers during a lesson (those responses where you have to re-order the given words into the right sentence).

Still some free typing is possible at other locations, so it is not completely covering all cases, so you still might be able to choose some not accepted verbs.
