What's going on with the Microphone questions? ~ Aren't we gonna have them anymore?
First of all I'd like to thank the Duolingo team for such a great job y'all have done!
I gotta say I'm almost starting to feel quite disappointed due to the recent problems we've been having with this ''New version'' of the site. I've had some other issues besides the one of the microphone.
- Since almost three days ago, I've been practicing Russian, and even if I had my microphone enabled in the settings' section there were no pronunciation exercises.
- Previously, I used to use the numeric keyboard when doing the exercise of 1),2),3) options, but now it's no longer working, I keep pressing on the key I need, and it doesn't even work.
Please, we're all waiting for you guys to fix this issue to be able to continue learning with this one, the best and most useful site ever!
Hiya - thanks for being such a dedicated user!
Can you let me know what browser you're using? We had discovered that multiple choice hotkeys weren't working in Firefox, but was fixed several days ago, so if they still aren't working for you, it looks like something else is wrong.
As for speaking exercises, they are currently only available on browsers that support the Web Speech API. We hope to bring them to other browsers too, but I can't give a confident ETA of when this will happen =[
Thanks for being patient with us =]
Thanks for this! This helped us figure out that not all of the languages that should have speaking exercises are getting them. The good news is the fix is implemented and should hopefully be deployed soon :)
Finally, a response regarding the speaking questions. I have posted on the troubleshooting forum AND have added comments to others who have posted on the forum regarding "where have our speaking questions gone?" but we never heard anything back from admins. Karint, can you please tell me if it is supported on Microsoft Edge? Thank you in advance.
I am practicing German from English using the last version of Firefox and even though in my setting I had enabled the microphone, since the recent changes of Duo layout pronunciation exercises have disappeared. Can you explain me the reason why? Thanks in advance for your kind answer.
my vocal exercices are also gone since yesterday and also the possibility to see the answers for revision. On the right sight, under the answer field, there is a field with different littles letters and signes since yesterday. I tried all things possible, but I can not resolve the problem. Can you help me ?
I've also lost all speaking exercises in the Android App. Are they disabled now for everyone, or might it be because of my android version (jelly bean, yes, my phone is a potato), even tho they worked a few weeks earlier?
I use the old Opera Version 12.16 Build 1860 Platform Win32 System Win7 and I have no sound from speaker. I wouldn't want to update it.
Thanks so much for your prompt response on the number selection hotkeys - it's such a relief having them work again!
I am using Firefox 53.0.3 (32-bit), fully updated. I am still having issues with no speaking or pronunciation exercises.
Thanks for a fantastic program! I'd really love it if it still had full functionality on Firefox.
Relatedly - Whereas recently (I think 2 weeks ago) the microphone questions gave two opportunities for a correct response, now (since last week) it only gives one. Is that a policy change or a bug? I'm using Chrome Version 55.0.2883.75 m on a Windows 7 Enterprise machine (work computer so OS can't be upgraded)
Are you sure these are enabled in all versions of Chrome? I am not seeing speaking exercises on my Chromebook.
My User Agent string: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; CrOS x86_64 10323.67.0) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/65.0.3325.209 Safari/537.36
Is the Web Speech API specifically queried? Or is just an user agent string comparison?
I am not getting the Microphone option in settings despite enabling experimental Web Speech API support in Firefox 64.
I downloaded Chrome (to my laptop/pc) tonight and finally got the speaking exercises back after a month of their disappearance. BUT, I did notice I'm not able to listen to a playback of my pronunciation anymore. That bums me out. I thought that this feature was super-cool on Duolingo. Sometimes when I listened to my translation/pronunciation I would laugh and realize how American I sound.
So glad to see this question. I've only just resumed Spanish lessons and wondered why I wasn't getting any pronunciation challenges in the last few days. I had turned off using the microphone on my tablet because I couldn't use it, but thought I'd be able to on my computer as I had before.
In the meantime I have realised that using Google Chrome the microphone indeed works, but you only find the reading exercises, but not anymore the oral translation ones. Does somebody knows the way to solve this problem?
I no longer get microphone exercises either. I'm practicing French and use Safari. Microphone is enabled. The exercises used to work for me. I really don't want to have to change browser every time I use Duolingo.
I downloaded Chrome and it's NOT WORTH IT. Yes, it now gives me pronunciation exercises, but will not play back my recording. I need to be able to compare what I sound like with the actual French speaker. I remain VERY DISAPPOINTED.
I thought I was the only one that was bothered by this. I've read where others are upset because they don't get a second attempt to get the speaking question correct anymore and I'm saying to myself... What? I find that this new format is not very challenging and I always get the pronunciation right the first time, which I didn't used to, and found the playback feature the best part of the speaking exercises. Seriously, this is not helping us with pronunciation skills like it used to.
I see that some people now have pronunciation exercises again, but I've been using Chrome all along and still haven't gotten them back. Don't know what to do.
Hey CJ_Mc.... I noticed a few weeks ago your comment said you had turned your microphone off when using your tablet and thought you could use it on your computer as before. Even though you would be using a different device you're going to have to go into your settings and turn the microphone back on. If you have already done this and you're not getting the pronunciation exercises on Chrome it could be that you need to go into Chrome settings and select "Allow" for Duolingo to use the microphone on Chrome. I hope this helps.
I didn't use a tablet. I can get a type of pronunciation exercise on Chrome , but NO PLAYBACK - which to me was the best part of it.
On the Russian course, I've never even had microphone questions - not on the website, and not on the app. Strange.
As for the numeric keyboard, I haven't had that happen to me.
I was wondering what is going on with the audio. The new changes it appears can not be considered improvements.
I have also just lost the pronunciation exercises, which I really like. I am using Safari on a Mac. Will these exercises be returning to Safari or am I going to have to get another browser just for Duolingo?
I'm having major microphone issues -- I'm running the latest version of Chrome and am getting speaking exercises, but when I click the mic it just spins and loads until I skip the question. Not fun! I tried Safari and simply didn't get speaking exercises. Thoughts?
