A suggestion to improve the gems update

The point of this update (ostensibly) is to keep people from powering too far ahead and forgetting everything they've already "learned." Duolingo already has a good way of measuring what users remember and what they've forgotten - skill strengths! Every golden skill is a skill that the algorithm thinks the user knows well. If users have all their skills gilded, there is no point in making them review since, according to the algorithm, they remember everything. In this case, users should immediately get their health back and shouldn't be forced to waste time reviewing material that they already know perfectly well. In similar situations, when users have <5 gilded skills, gilding all these skills should automatically refill all health. Of course, users should always be free to choose what they review to earn their health back, but they should be rewarded for choosing skills that need to be strengthened.

I'm really not a fan of this update, but since it looks like it's not going anywhere, I think this would make it a lot more bearable.

This itself would be quite the improvement I'd say!

No, right now it picks for you, and it almost certainly picks whatever the earliest degilded skill is (and likely, I think, a fairly early skill if everything is already gold). This, I think, is part of why the condemnation of the system has been so universal and vociferous. If you pick the skill to review yourself, you don't get any health back.

Of course, if you've got the health system and it operates differently for you, that would be interesting to know.

Wow, that's even worse than I thought. No, somehow I'm one of the lucky few that hasn't been hit with it yet, even though my A/B test data clearly shows I'm destined for it.
