hello!!

Why duolingo imposed in the site this "Full heart" thing??, why didn't submit it to vote?? why didn't even test it before?? Duolingo: hope it can be removed because really its worthless.. useless.. sometimes less is better you know?

It's simply annoying, First of all I'm new in Greek language, the way it functions the useless full health icon is: everytime I get 1 word wrong (ONE SINGLE WORD!!) this thing decreases one life (out of 5) which is unbelievable !!! **end result: I made 5 mistakes and now I have zero heart life and the app cannot even let me continue with the practice until I give half my gems to refill the nonsense heart life, how convenient huh? ..again Im new in Greek language! doesn't it suppose to be fun to learn/ study a language? Im new in Greek! and im permitted to make mistakes, but it's nonsense this new silly useless system, apparently to duolingo I am not permitted to make more than 5 mistakes! so disappointed by duolingo.

who would do this silly new system?? so far duolingo used to be a cool fun way of leaning, and its becoming imposing and nonsense with stuff that aren't even useful, so frustrating. .. the way it is going now I wouldn't even be surprised if in a couple of days every time I get an answer right or even when I complete my XP, im pushed to watch an advertisement video so I can continue with my practice!!

Im sure im not the only one having to deal with this NONSENSE! :(

I agree. I used to prefer the app version over the online version but after this update I'm not sure. It's hard for me to even finish a lesson in the app without having to stop because I'm out of hearts. The new update seems to aim for perfection rather than learning from your mistakes (which is what learning is about).

It aims at encouraging mistakes so you buy gems to restore health. It has no real basis in discouraging binging

I'm sorry that you are having such a hard time. Is there anyway for you to do your Greek tree on the website or a PC?

Thanks, yes I guess I will end up dropping the app and go back to the website .. (could be great if Duo would remove the Life-health heart tho..)

It seems unlikely that it will be removed in the near future. Mostly, I prefer the website for most languages but am using the app for Japanese (as are you I see) and a combination of the app and website for Portuguese.

Sorry, you asked recently: "Are you able to practice or continue with new lessons on the website instead?" but I cannot comment there so, answering your question, I gave it up even the try, so I don't know, I got enough when Duo charged me double gems for the freeze streak, (600 gems)..

I've never used the streak freezes so that's saved me a lot of lingots/gems. Most of the time, I usually don't miss too many so health hasn't been a huge issue for me but lost all 5 bars this morning. (Normally, I don't curse.) Mostly, I just let the time run as I had other things to do, but also did a couple practices when those degilded. In the meantime, I continued my lessons on the website as that's better for some of the lessons anyway in my opinion. Next time I lose all 5 bars, I'll try using the gems. I've got them, so I might as well spend them on something useful.

Just want to make sure you know about the "Practice" button on the health tab—it gives you a review lesson that refills your health.

Isn't it five practice to get back to full health

Yeah, if your health is empty.

Thanks I'm pretty sure I will fail some lessons with five chances. So I would need every one available

Apparently so but wouldn't work for me. At the 3rd attempt I gave up.

It may be that if you lost the hearts in Greek, you'd need to practice Greek to regain the health bars. I'm not sure about that, but it would make sense. You might try that before giving up completely on the app.

I agree, I would think so, the thing is that I just started Greek, so I had just finished/ unlocked the first circle (I don't know how to call it), and that first circle became yellow you know, (while the rest were blocked and grey still), then I continued with the second circle, which I couldn't finish because half way through I made 5 mistakes, and I couldn't continue neither, "because I had no health bars left",

It would make sense as you put it, I just don't get it, Duo didn't let me practice to regain my health bars because I didn't have anything to practice in Greek, which doesn't make any sense since it was my first completed circle in the course.. sorry I hope I didn't make this confusing.

I just gave up when I tried to practice other language to regain my health bars, after 3 practices in French my bars remained the same, grey.

Yes. That's how I used to cover my XP before. Now, it turns out in Greek e.g. I go through first lesson, I happened to make 5 mistakes (out of them 2 were misspelling mistakes), ran out of life-health, then go to French to "practice" there, aiming to increase to full-health again which wouldn't happen, I tried like 3 times the practice button, and every time I finished the practice lesson the heart icon remained the same, empty :(

..and on top of everything, I've tried to move on with the Greek lessons but Duo won't let me continue because I have empty heart.. that's just ironic! how can I learn if I'm not even allowed to move forward in my new language..

I hope you report this as a "bug" (error) to their programming team, or that the team picks up on your post here in the Discussion forum. Surely this cannot be what they had been intended, surely their ultimate aim was to make more people want to spend more time on the site, not less, or even worse - leaving the site permanently due to frustration. That would be a terrible business idea for any web-based company.

I've actually posted messages on at least 3 of the main moderators of Greek (at least to make them aware of how the system is working so far), but no reply yet. I agree with you,

I'd think one of their goals is to attract more and more members by providing cool and efficient tools, like they used to, to choose quality over quantity. Anyways at this point I ended up removing Greek, and got equipped with the streak freeze (..giving Duo the cold shoulder) :(

...and the worst part of this is that they charged me the double for the S.Freeze..

Did you try doing a practice lesson in Greek? I'm not sure, but maybe they want you to review in the language you made mistakes in because they think the mistakes show that you haven't fully grasped earlier lessons.

yes I tried to practice my single one completed/unlocked circle, but couldn't do it, even tried to practice in diff languages to get back full health life but nothing changed.

I mean using the "Practice" button that shows a +1 health symbol. Edit: oh I see that probably is what you mean. If the Practice button isn't giving you health, that must be a bug.

I'd better hurry and learn "my" language on a pc while there is still no "heart life", just lingots. I gave you one btw.

Score it down in apple store and make a note that you hate health then use the website. Duo claims their numbers are better with health but I think they are defining the terms so it looks true

Could it be possible for you to circumvent it by using Duolingo in the phone's web browser? I don't have an iPhone so I couldn't possibly test it out myself.

Is this on the app? I don't have it (thank goodness). I've also been using the web version a lot recently too because the long lessons with the app were getting too hard for me to concentrate on.

I recommend Languagetransfer.org, they have several huge audio courses for beginners and Greek is among them.

Thank you Mereade, I might check that out. What I've opted for lately has been Memrise.com , it is helpful in my case for vocabulary, it has a bunch of stuff and one may get a bit overwhelmed but once u recognise where is what it gets fun too.

Sure, just Lnguage Transfer could go well together with the memrise courses, as it is more about speaking and grammar, while memrise is primarily for vocab learning.

I wish you lots of fun! I'd like to learn Greek one day too, but I am highly unsure I will ever have enough free time to add it.
