Interpret it however you want, but the app is developed by americans. The first kanji literally means little so its basically school for little kids
To add to this, middle school (or the one next to this one,i dont remember the name ) has the kanji for middle , and university has the kanji for big

That's a valid point, but they do need to pick some terminology to use for the English translation. I'm sure they just try to use what they believe to be the most common or widely used term. They aren't going to be able to cater to everyone's vocabulary.
年 is the counter for years so if you mention in which year of school the student is, you should use this kanji after the number.
Assuming everyone will understand what elementary and middle school and where grades two and four etc fit into that is unfair.
I agree, I had to guess what elementary was. In Australia we have primary, middle and secondary school.
When splitting years in Japanese schooling, I reckon you start over at year 1 when you move up to middle school? Or does it just keep counting up?
You start over indeed! And then again when you move up to high school.
