Why I cannot contact Duolingo friends now, is this temporary?
No probably not, the activity streams were completely removed and I am very doubtful that there will ever be a replacement. According to Luis von Ann's latest comments on reddit it appears that they will continue to develop smarter chat bots instead of bringing back a chat system.
If true, this would be another major mistake (IMO) of DL decision makers. What good is a foreign language learning system if it does not make it easy to communicate with friends... Sorry, I don't think that clubs are the answer and Discussions are too widely open...
This is a major mistake
communication should be a key element
I totally agree with you. But what can you do, Duolingo has their way of interpreting user data and statistics and it doesn't matter if there is any common sense behind it or not.
That's easy. Use it until a better product comes around. I have already started using Memrise because of the latest changes. When Immersion was around, I had no need of another language learning/translation tool.
Yes and many of us had been using Discord to communicate with each other even before the loss of the activity streams and they have become even more popular since. Discord is a free text and voice messaging service set up like an Internet chat room, originally designed for gamers but works great for language learning communities. You may already be on Discord but if you aren't, let me know what languages you are interested in and I will give you the appropriate invite links.
Thank you kindly for pointing out Discord. I am not interested in a particular language but in several at any given time. Translation work is my primary reason rather than chatting with people (although I like chatting with people!). Discord does not seem to be the right tool for that sort of activity...
I created a post trying to reach out to one of my close duolingo friends, yet a moderator deleted it. However, when a moderator does the same thing, his post is allowed to remain....I'm trying to be patient and wait for the supposed private messaging system, however, their deletion of my post got to me a bit.....
oh, too bad it's gone. I wish they had kept it until they have a new chat system in place. Thank you for the info (:
Duolingo has now become a regular commercial website, selling advertisers access to users. For that purpose, having a million registered users who rarely use the system is far more commercially important than having fewer people who actually use the system intensely and learn the language. Say goodbye to all the characteristics of the system that make it attractive to committed learners.
Yeah, but I'll bet Luis von Ann has learned how to say "profit" in A LOT of different languages . . .
You can try, but unless you get 1 million+ of signatures/backers, Luis will not take you seriously!
know i'm busy trying to get people for the catalan-from-french cours petition...but there is so much annoyed people with the new duolingo settings that sould not be very very hard to get some houndreds of users for a #WeWantOldDuolingoBackNOW campaign; with a short list of concrete demands; focused in a single twitter user, no?
seriously, seeing the language levels lots of people have in so many languages, they must can invest some minutes in getting a better duolingo service instead of investing the same time complaining in the duolingo forums...
Back in December (right after Christmas; nice Christmas/New Year gift!-) when Immersion was turned off without any support to at least recover the work that people did for years for free, we had more than 1 thousand users (many of them were long time heavy users/supporters/volunteers of Duolingo) that asked for the feature to be kept alive and/or what we could do to keep it around. Luis thought that we were too few. My guess is that unless you get 1 million backers, you are wasting your time. Good luck getting them! I will vote for you if it is an easy access location but I will not take the time to explain to DL folks why they are wrong again. BTW, there were several offers from professional people to volunteer their time and/or other creative solutions were proposed to Luis but either he did not see them or did not care to consider any help/ideas to keep Immersion alive...
Welcome to the club (pun intended) world!
