Gems vs. Lingots

Why is my Spanish course in Lingots, but my Japanese course in Gems?

June 9, 2017

I have discovered that the iOS apps use Gems and the website application version uses Lingots.

I also discovered a huge discrepancy in the quantity in each: on my iOS apps, I have 902 Gems but in my website version, I have 75 Lingots. In all other respects, the two are in sync. Just an inconsistency in the overall scope of a great concept and this, in my view, is not conducive to motivating a new user to learn a language. I hope that the developers can harmonize the program across all platforms. Comparing the iOS apps to the website version, I find the website preferable.

I think that your gems and lingots ARE in sync, just lingots are worth more than gems.

How are gems and ingots IN synch if one is worth more than the other?

May 30, 2019

the value of gems is directly proportional to the value of lingots is what he ment

And Lingots for Android too. ;)

I actually have it the other way around. My Japanese course is the only one still operating in lingots, unless I'm on my computer - then all of the courses are. When I'm on my phone, the other languages are all in gem form from what I can see. So, if we lose/gain gems, how many lingots do we lose/gain? Does anyone understand the current system?

Gems for me on iOS but lingots on Web

September 4, 2018

If you use a mobile app it's gems and if you use the computer it's lingots. I'm not sure why. I'm not even sure why the gems/lingots matter if you are a Plus subscriber. I have 2004 gems and 89 lingots

And an lingot more now ;-)

August 17, 2018

I have 24 lingots on my laptop and 448 on my iOS. Does anyone know how many gems = a lingot and vice versa?

I think the exchange rate is variable. Maybe they should be listed on the forex charts (just Kidding)

How many Gems are in one Lingot?

May 13, 2019

For me (I have 1182 gems on iOS and 331 lingots on web) it's 3.52 gems per lingot. But the other posters above have different ratios, so I have no clue what any of it means! lol

BUT both "Idioms and proverbs" and "flirting" are 1000 gems each on iOS and they're 30 lingots each on the web which is a ratio of 33.33 gems per lingot. So I will definitely shop on the web, as on iOS it's almost all of my gems, but on the web it's only a tenth!

This will probably answer your question:
You are looking at the Spanish course on a computer or android device, and the Japanese course on an iOS device, right?

June 9, 2017

Actually, just on my phone, but the issue remains the same here... Lingots for Spanish.

June 12, 2017

Duolingo is switching to gems at least that's what I hear.

June 9, 2017

so what is the conversion to gems to lingots?

June 3, 2019

I think unfortunately that there is no current and official conversion yet. Even more, it's seems that the gems and the lingots are not connected. I just experienced it, I bought the extra skill "Flirting" in iOS with gems, but my lingots in the web version did not decrease. Then, I bought "Idioms and proverbs" with lingots on the web version, same results, no decrease of my gems in iOS...

June 19, 2019

I had over 4800 gems on iOS but first time login to web and BOOM now I am stuck with only 120 lingots even on iOS ... total con

June 26, 2019

which is odd. the ratio is off. i have 75 lingots but 1210 gems
