Duolingo is the most popular way to learn languages in the world. Best of all, it's 100% free!

Good things ahead for DuoLingo?

In the past several months, I've seen the extremely helpful "Immersion" tool disappear, the introduction of advertising (only slightly annoying) and in-app purchasing, the disappearance of flash cards on the web version, and the disappearance of the quiz (which I took regularly to gauge my learning). The latter was really the only reason to earn "lingots".
In addition to these changes, I've seen the the prioritization of iOS over android/web platforms, with promises made to eventually bring new developments like "Duo Bots" to other platforms, which hasn't yet occurred.

I realize I'm getting a free service and I still appreciate and value DuoLingo, but nearly every change I've seen to the service in the past several months has been negative, or in the case of clubs (because of their restrictive nature), neutral.

Can anybody help me understand the reasoning for the removal of services? Does anybody know if there's anything exciting in the pipeline -- or if old services will eventually return? Thanks in advance for your insight!

They've literally rewritten the code that runs the website. They've removed the very significant technical strictures that kept them from building a Japanese course long ago. The content of the Japanese course simply lends itself to existing functionality on the app that's not on the web yet, so it comes to the app first. While only iOS has Health, Android has gotten Duolingo Plus and Achievements.

Yes, some of these roll-outs seem to have been bungled and I certainly miss Immersion and activity streams, but they'd still be here if they had attracted but a thin slice of users. Duolingo caters to the market that's there, not the one we might wish were there.

Reflecting on my initial comments, I realized I was remiss in not stating that the achievements were a welcome addition. However, I immediately had 11/12, so it would be great if they expanded the achievements for intermediate/advanced/long-term users.

The developers said they had to remove many features from the website because they were rebuilding it from the ground up, and now that they finished that they will add features back. I agree with you though; I am slightly afraid about the direction Duolingo might take. I don't think they've been specific about what features they will add back after the site rebuild.

As far as I remember, Luis von Ahn has stated that the reason is not that they have the most users on iOS - they simply happen to have more iOS developers.

they simply have more iOS devs... because developing for android is more complicated, more expensive AND brings less revenue. the fact that the app store revenue is higher than the more popular play store is what matters when establishing a business model.

I've heard this about user streams/timelines but nothing else. Immersion isn't coming back, for instance (unless the staff saying that were just lying, but why would you willingly prompt so many complaints?)

The introduction of adware takes a lot of time and effort. So other things have to step back.

Even interesting like bots is fine if it actually reaches Android and the desktop website, IMO.

Many things start off been free on the internet. Ultimately wages have to paid, infrastructure has to be paid for ..... etc So eventually some form of revenue stream has to be found, to support everything, and everyone. I suspect the Duo team are just looking to find an income from somewhere, like millions of other businesses have had to do. All the changes and omissions have forced me into using other methods to learn so I now just use Duo as a library for new words and grammar. Currently im rushing through the tree to finish before it gets totally unuseable, which it almost is. I started off loving it now it annoys me. Many others are feeling the same.
