"Discuss sentence" button with no pop-up window

It used to be the case that when clicking in the "Discuss sentence" button a pop-up window would appear where you could read and write comments. Now in the new web version it loads in the same tab, taking all the space, and when you want to return to the lesson your progress is gone. You have to start from the beginning again. This means I can't see the comments while I'm doing a lesson, which I used to find very useful.

I'm using Firefox 53 in Arch Linux.

For me, under the new webversion, it opens in a new tab (and take indeed all the space of that new tab). Hence, once I've finish to read/write on the Sentence Discussion, I close its tab and go back to the lesson tab.
You're the first person I read saying it's opening into the same tab, so just to be sure: could you check it's not opening in a new tab (separate tab from the lesson's one)?

It opened into the same tab, but then I tried using a fresh Firefox profile and this time it opened into a new tab. So this mean some configuration I made is the problem. I can't figure out which one.

For me, discussions are now opening in a new tab, whereas they used to be part of the same tab I was working in. Sentences with existing discussions still work just fine.

However, if I want to initiate a new discussion - ie there's no existing discussion already - the new tab opens, then disappears, and there's no way to get it back. Clicking on the 'Discuss sentence' button then does nothing. Most frustrating. It's been happening in general strengthening sessions for the Greek course, on web, using Windows/Chrome.

I have the same problem. I guess this problem comes from Duolingo's end as it is browser independent.

For me, it opens in a new tab, but only when my answer was correct. When I get something wrong, it does this thing where it looks like it starts to open and then shuts down immediately. (FWIW, I'm using Chrome on a PC. I've already changed my settings to allow pop-ups.)
