Subculture Skill

Can the subculture skill please become an optional bonus unit in the Lingot store before the course leaves beta? Some people really do not want to have to be inundated with material about maid costumes and whatnot just to complete the course.

Along with Olympics, this should be a bonus skill once the course enters beta, according to what they wrote on the incubator page:

https://incubator.duolingo.com/courses/ja/en/status

I enjoyed the Subculture skill when I did it. It's probably my favourite skill in the tree. My only complaint was it's a bit short.

What I'm more interested in is what has happened to the third bonus skill, National Holidays? It was visible in the tree up until just before the release to iOS. Now it's not visible in the tree nor been added to the lingot store... Although, since the incubator page still shows the course as currently being in alpha phase, I guess there's still time for them to put it back in? ^^

Well, further down in that post it is stated that due to adding "something new" the incubator progress is bugged. It is in beta now.

I don't know. I'm not convinced.

The way I see it is that they got to the end of creating the tree by the 18th of May, but hadn't yet sorted out the course for phase 2 launch on Duolingo's home platform—the website. So instead they just gave early access to the "beta" on a secondary platform (iOS app), while web is still lingering in alpha~beta phase development.

I won't personally see it as having truly reached phase 2 until: we can log into the website with our course set to Japanese; we can view the discussion forum like all other beta courses can; and, more importantly, we can actually do the tree on the default platform (without the html trick)... At the moment it's just prematurely released on secondary platforms not everyone even owns devices for (although, with the release on Android, they do now have the vast majority of people covered).

Yeah, I can agree. I've never dealt with any beta courses to compare so I don't know if this is usual behavior, but regardless, they say it's in beta. Oh well, it's a bit of a mess.

Speaking of which, I can't help but notice you only have Japanese by your name yet you're posting here. How are you managing that?

With the html trick, one of the few things you can do is access the discussion forum (so long as you don't open any new tabs in the process).

Can do: everything on the discussion forum, view other people's profiles, view tree, lessons, strengthen skils, lingot store, timed quiz, progress quiz, view notifications.

Cannot do: open page in new tab, refresh page, view own profile, view settings, view the add a new course page, click on notifications. In some circumstances, even clicking "Home" will kick you out.

So I can actually post while my tree is set to Japanese.

However, if you check my profile, you'll see I always have at least one other course in the list (usually Spanish). They just aren't displayed next to my name because they are always at 0 XP (or more specifically, because they haven't reached level 2).

It won't let you into the site at all, even using the html trick, if the only course you have in your learning list is Japanese. So usually I just switch to Spanish when I'm on the discussion page (or when I get kicked out and have to do the html trick again). ^^

The incubator announcement made it seem like that would be the case, along with the Olympics and National Holidays (which seems to be missing). While I think that the skill will be of interest to many, I understand that it isn't for everyone and that it isn't quite relevant to the core of the language, as some words specific to the theme of the unit are pretty much jargon.

National Holidays was actually in the tree briefly. It didn't look like it had any lessons made for it though — just any empty skill. It was in a weird position in the tree too, placed somewhere around the first checkpoint (I think), rather than at the bottom of the tree.

I still have the address of the page in my browser history, but it looks like the page has been removed... ^^;

placed somewhere around the first checkpoint

That is where (actual) bonus skills are located. Trees equipped for purchasable bonus skills have a blank row around the first checkpoint that fills in when the skills are purchased in the lingot store. The fact that Olympics and Subculture are in the tree and don't cost lingots means that they weren't actually implemented as (formal) bonus skills. Whether they were ever intended to be, or were using the word "bonus" in a more lose fashion than applies to other trees I obviously don't know.

Ooh. I didn't know that's where bonus skills are actually meant to be placed! The only other tree I've done is JA→EN, and that one doesn't have any bonus skills.

Until you said this, I was starting to wonder if I'd just imagined the whole thing of seeing it there. ^^;

(Really wish I'd taken a screenshot of the tree at that time...)
