Okay, so Lingots at the moment, are well, useless.
Yes, I know that there are wonderful things in the shop that you can buy right now, but after you buy everything, you basically have a useless number in the top right corner. Right now I have a huge reserve of Lingots (although naut has WAY more than I do), sitting here, chillin with my notification bell, which is spammed with even more Lingots.
To counter this, more ways to spend Lingots have to be made.
Superfun list of suggestions! :D
There should be an owl to greet you when you start a lesson, with a button next to it saying "Begin Lesson." Then, at the end, you will meet the owl again, while it tells you all of the wonderful things happening, ex. "You learned Basics 1! Congratulations!" You should be able to buy costumes for the owl, just like the version on iOS. Buying costumes in the Lingot store can make your Duo Owl look snazzy! Some costume suggestions:
A Mexican themed costume, such as a sombrero with a red and black suit.
A French themed costume, such as a beret and a paintbrush.
A Portuguese themed costume, such as a soccer t-shirt.
An Italian themed costume, with some pasta.
I don't know if this one is really a good idea, but you should be able to pay around 10 Lingots to have your article put at the top of the list of articles, which can help translate the article faster.
Maybe the ability to buy some gift wrap and something in the store. Then, you can send your gift to one of your followers, or your friends! If they happen to have that item already, the sender will just receive a notification from the browser. Something like this:
This has been suggested by 1bimic, and I will say it again. There should be some competitions and challenges for users to earn Lingots, and spend them on new items in the store.
This was suggested by Xyde. You should be able to buy a theme for around 500 Lingots (the price can change) which can make your Duolingo page look a lot cooler!
I hope these suggestions are considered!
I'd like to see more special sections like Christmas, Flirting & Idioms. In the beginning they were a real incentive, not to mention just plain fun. More fun than buying extra hearts or streak freezes. When I make the Owl cry, I know that I need more practice, not a get out of jail free card. So, something that's just for fun.
Yes, I agree! I have only done Flirting, but I really worked hard to get those 30 Lingots so I could open it up.
I really want the Christmas one. At the moment there's a gap in my tree where it should be. I hope they let me buy it this year! More special sections would be great- fun to save up and buy and great to learn extra vocabulary with!
Je suis complètement d'accord avec toi. J'ai fait une discussion sur ceci, mais il y a longtemps. Bonne journée et encore bonne idee!
I prefer to buy a coach on android otherwise all the dressing things are useless. I do like the gifting idea :)
Different idea would be collaborative gifts:
DL wants new gears. Users pay lingots in favour for phrases from any DL course. The top three ( or the top one in each language) get on a shirt, the rest get their lingots back.
same game for new languages. Should it be Norwegian, Swedish, or Danish next. Either each course gets a fixed prise tag, or more like an auction. (DL can still push other languages which are in their economic interest, e.g. Between different Asian languages)
Nice ideas. I especially like the idea of having Scandinavian languages, but I believe it's not so much up to the people who run this site, as to what languages appear, as to ordinary people getting together to create the courses.
Basically, if I am right, if you are say fluent in Norwegian and German, you could then put together, with the help of other ordinary bods, courses for Norwegian for German speakers, and German for Norwegian speakers.
If I totally misunderstood what you wrote, then nevermind me, I am having an odd day :)
To be honest I'm not too convinced by the idea of buying languages. My point is that I would like to buy something meaningful collaboratively, rather than a pixel gimmick, that feels like infantil Facebook game. I pretty much like the ideas of a priorterised translation, or maybe a private translation.
Well, to better explain the idea with the languages:
Ordinary people are creating the course. However, currently there are too many "language experts" available, and not all courses can get incubated, as each course will bind resources at DL. They have to evaluate the skills of the contributors, and be available for debugging and q&a. Currently the incubator seems still to be a bit buggy, but even after that - it will always be more difficult to create a course than doing a lesson a day.
Currently there is currently a high demand in European, and artificial languages. But a German->Esperanto course might not be economically interesting. Chinese -> japoneese might be a huge market, but it would not be in favour of the community, because most of us are European/English/Spanish centred.
DL seems to be willing to invest in both sorts of courses. Some to hit the big market ( courses for Russians, Chinese, ...), but also some of the community favourites (Irish ). For the second there might be an option for users to prioritise a course by voting with lingots. By these means, the voices of active members, who are contributing a lot in translations have a prominent voice. It might even inspire some people to do some additional translations in the week before such an auction.
Ah ah, now I understand. Yes, in that case being able to vote for courses would be a very good idea.
Great idea, another one I would suggest is that you can use 500 lingots to purchase a different theme(web interface/mobile interface)! It would be cool if there's some differentiation between the colour scheme, etc.
i wonder if we can do a little minecraft thing here...like you have to keep the Owl happy and full...
i disagree with you, cause then duo would have users more intent on keeping the owl happy than actually learning...
Not if the way you keep your owl happy is by having conversations with it in the language you're learning.
yes i agree with this idea... maybe a basic conversation with it every day once you learn up to a certain skill...
All right, this may seem weird and may already happening, but what about using the beat the clock thingy and if you do complete it, you receive a lingot bag which is equal to 20 lingots?
That is far too many lingots, for I have beaten the clock numerous times!
I like the idea of buying themes that portray different landscapes for each language
