Good morning Jack,
how very nice to read from you again.
Some of the others recommended this site: http://translatihan.com/ for translation practice.
Maybe we'll all meet again over there.
Have a good day,
XD

I am native German and looked shortly to this little rhyme. Nice idea, but why do you not use the German 'Umlauts', where they should be?

  • fällt
  • grün
  • wäscht

Is there a reason for that?

Also for the 'sz' respective 'ß'

  • Spaß

Sadly we still have to use this old character in certain words and combinations.

Additionally:

  • Regen ist ein Besen, legt die Luft ganz rein

The verb should be 'fegt' (fegen) here, because a 'Besen' 'fegt'

  • Er fegt mit dem Besen den Boden.

And what does ',nnmjjjjj' mean?

thank you

I am Scottish and when I write with my pencil I use the umlauts

but when I type on the computet umlats are beyond my understanding

"nnmijj" is the creative input from a young boy learning this German

Ok, I understand. Then you should better write

  • faellt
  • gruen
  • waescht
  • (oeffnen) - an additional example for 'ö'

instead. 'Spass' is then correct (the only possibility).

The difference between the utilization of 'ß' instead of 'ss' is often the pronunciation: "ss" is used, when we pronunce the preceding vowel shortly, 'ß' is used, when we pronounce the preceding vowel longer.

Recording to the 'Neue deutsche Rechtschreibung' (revised German Spelling), we have to write some words differently as before. I. e. '...., daß' is wrong now, we have to write '..., dass' because the preceding vowel 'a' is pronounced is short.

Because the preceding 'a' in 'Spaß' is long, we still have to write it with 'ß' (I hope, they will some day remove this ugly character from the list of German characters, same for the 'Umlauts').

As for 'ß' there is no capital letter, whe have to use 'SS' when we write a word with 'ß' in capital letters:

  • Spaß = SPASS

"legt rein" or "reinlegen" has different meanings, as you know. I also had to look twice on this line to guess the meaning :-) Maybe I am wrong and the other meanings are meant? ;-)

Just had a look at the lovely song. But I don't get the line "legt die Luft ganz rein"? I guess it's supposed to mean "cleans the air", but I would translate "jemanden reinlegen" as to play a trick on somebody.

Best regards from sunny, hot Germany

So far Monday is well,

since I only woke up two hours ago.

That's probably because the Scottish time zone is six hours ahead of the USA.

Anyway, good morning from the USA I know that didn't rhyme. I'm bad at rhyming. =)
