Received an Email that "Japanese is here."
Got an e-mail saying that "Japanese is here," I subscribed for the notification upon release of the web version, I already have Japanese on android and it seems strange to me that I would get this Email at this time, has anyone else received this e-mail and does anyone know when the web release is due?
I am confused too, I went looking and found that apparently the estimated completion date was the 18th of May 2017, and that it although it displays that it is 68% done according to the creators of the course it is really 99% complete. I didn't get an email about it being ready (although I did click the "notify me" button) but some people I know did get the email. This link might be helpful... https://incubator.duolingo.com/courses/ja/en/status
Well, whichever version you are waiting for, I received the same notification and started using the iOS version. It is buggy as heck. It can't pronounce many of the characters it uses, so it just leaves them silent, and often chooses the wrong pronunciation when it does try ("ichi hiki" instead of "ippiki" for example...). It pronounces "wa" as "ha" because the hiragana character is "ha" (but everyone who studies Japanese knows it is pronounced "wa" when used as the particle). When it gives a Japanese sentence that is ambiguous for "a" or "the" when translating to English, sometimes it only accepts one of the answers, etc. etc. I have been tempted to give up on it rather than fight with it constantly. When my Japanese wife hears the pronunciation of some of the words she just says "huh???" or else she just laughs they are sometimes so bad. I would not recommend using this for learning how to actually SPEAK Japanese. It seems ok for reading.
