Gehen wir was essen?

Hello, I translated this sentence as "What are we going to eat?" and got it wrong. How can it mean "Are we going to eat?" though (according to DL)???? Wont that just be "Gehen wir essen?" ?

Thanks.

It means something like "let's go eat something" or "shall we have something to eat?"

"was" in that sentence is more like "something" (not "what").

To expand on what matfran2001 said, "was" is short for "etwas" ("something"). You'll encounter this a lot in colloquial German so it's good to know that one :)
