Hi, Can this word mean grandchild or is it only used for grandson? In wiktionary, the word for grandchild is enkelkind, but in DL it's enkel.. lil confused.
Despite what others say., I have to add more: Enkel is also Plural and can describe any ratio (only grandsons, only granddaughters or any mix).
Ein Enkel; zwei Enkel.
Also in some regions you might encounter the Enkel singular to describe either a grandson or a grandaughter, but its more common to see Enkel=grandson; Enkelin=granddaughter.
Der Enkel, die Enkel. Singular is mostly male, in some varieties the Singular can describe both. Plural can be any combination.
Die Enkelin, die Enkelinnen. Always female.
Der Enkelsohn, die Enkelsöhne. Always male.
Die Enkeltochter, die Enkeltöchter. Always female.
Das Enkelkind, die Enkelkinder. This has never any information about the sex. So both singular and plural can be anything.
