Ever since the app update, Duolingo mysteriously loses all progression when I do anything offline. I do a lesson offline, go back online, and the information just disappears and reverts back to my previous progress. I've tried keeping the app open, closing it before I go online; everything. Any help? This is in the German tree, I haven't tried it for any other language. The app also has trouble downloading hints offline.

This is very frustrating. I just completed a lesson yesterday on my phone, while online, got the points and today I don't see them. I lost 63 day streak. These bugs are unacceptable.

This seems to be still happening in the current version. It happened to me yesterday when I did 3 lessons (completing 2 modules) offline on the Android app. When I got back online I lost the progress (and the streak, saved by a "streak freeze" bonus).

The iOS app off-line mode is problematic for me too. My prime time for being able to use Duolingo is when commuting or traveling which is also when network access it problematic or sporadic.

It is really frustrating losing progress and streaks. In one instance was traveling to a really remote area with no 3G or mobile coverage one time for a few day, but still diligently doing Duolingo only to lose it when back in civilization. Today on the train I completed Gerund Verbs and made progress with Nature and Materials but now that has all gone.

I did notice when starting the app again when I had network access again, the V. Gerund was marked as complete and in gold, but then changed to red and 0/1

I'm using the latest version of the iOS app as at 29 Sept 2014

This does the same for me in French and Dutch - it's very frustrating, especially as I like to use it on the underground, and cannot get a signal.

Looking at this a bit further, I think in my case at least that the off-line problems are actually time-zone problems. This may apply to others also.

  1. Off-line mode only works intra Duolingo Day, so as long as you re-sync with Duolingo before the end of your Duolingo Day your progress will be recorded.

  2. When signing up for Duolingo, your ‘Duolingo Day’ is the timezone of where you signed up. Looking at other discussions, this timezone setting is immutable and cannot be changed. In my case, my Duolingo Day is set to GMT+12

I’m now in France which is GMT+1, so the end of my Duolingo Day is now right in the middle of my French day. So if I sync in the morning, work off-line while travelling and then re-sync later in the day, any progress made is lost because the afternoon is now a new Duolingo day.

It would be great if there were some way to change timezones which I believe would fix this issue.

Would be great to have this offline bug sorted - I still lose progress a lot of the time. In the meantime, here's a workaround I've come up with for my daily commute. On the London underground, some stations have Wi-Fi that I can connect to. So I get to the very last question in a set and see if I was correct or not, but BEFORE I click continue, I wait until I'm connected to Wi-Fi again at the next station, and then click on continue. This then saves progress, and I can download my next weak questions before the train moves again.

I know this only helps in certain situations, but for me it means I can still do my lessons on the underground. Hope this helps at least someone.

This just happened to me too... not so worried about losing the streak but annoying to have to do those lessons all over again.

This is still happening as of late August 2015. I loaded up the app on my iPad in the airport (with cell coverage), did a few lessons then boarded the plane. I continued to do lessons on the plane after losing coverage and there was no indication that anything was wrong. Eventually I closed the app and went on with my day. Then when I logged in later, all the progress I made after the time I boarded the plane (and lost coverage) was gone.

Just bumping this up because it's still happening in the latest version for iPad on iOS 9. For me it's always just the last two or three lessons where progress gets lost, so maybe it does have to do with offline sync, because my internet connection is a little shaky.

But I didn't go back and forth between different devices (only iPad) and still this happened. Maybe it happens during the "Grading Lesson" at the end of a lesson - if this takes place during a time where my connection is dropped out out then this screen just sits there for a minute until internet access is back, and then the sync seems to get corrupted somehow.

Probably really tough to reproduce for the devs, that's why it hasn't been fixed for over a year now?

Hi pampkin- Are you using the Android or iOS app? Can you share a screenshot?

That happens to me too. And sometimes when I am doing a lesson offline, I can not hear some sentences. It would be good to fix this. I have photo but I do not know how to upload it.

Anyway very helpful app

This does the same for me and is doing my head in. I use this on the underground, which is perfect downtime for such an app, however, not saving my progress renders it useless. Please help!

I found that this happened sometimes when the app updates itself before it gets a chance to synchronize. I have disabled the auto-update on Android and it seems to help.

I've run into same problem. I tend to use the app offline while commuting and it is really frustrating to redo some parts several times. Moreover, I've enccountered weird states, where progress for some previous parts wasn't recorded while new ones were unlocked.

This is still an issue; I lost my 65-day streak yesterday even though I did Duolingo offline and connected to the Internet later.

Same for me. The first time it was like a 140 day streak and I was really disappointed. Now the streaks are just starting to mean less to me since I know it isn't reliable. It's really a let down since I really used to enjoy seeing the progress over time but now if I want to I have to make sure I don't do it away from a good connection.

What Ive started doing is making sure I buy (with lingots) a streak freeze before I travel timezones to ensure my streak stays in place. I'll lose a day, but that's better than losing the entire streak.

Still happening. It is not in their interest to fix it whrn they are charging money to keep streaks, is it?

That is what I suspect. I have a busy schedule so I'm not always online but now I just have to resign myself to the fact that I'll lose my streak if I try to do it anywhere there isn't reliable wifi.
