In general, in Italian, or what? Prepositions in general are sort of the glue that holds the important words in a sentence together, determine your location, your starting point, your ending point, the exact way you are doing the action. It is sort of impossible to speak more than VERY basic sentences in any language without them.

I put the baby in the car. I put the baby under the car. I put the baby on top of the car. Seems like prepositions are pretty important.

Prepositions provide great detail in communication, most notably a sense of time, direction and position. In Italian unfortunately, there are a lot of prepositions and, like many languages, they can convey different meanings depending on their usage and don't always translate exactly into English. The best way to learn them, in my opinion, is to learn the general rule of when to use the preposition and then practice. As you begin to encounter irregularities (and trust me you will) you will eventually memorize them and expressing yourself in that way will become more natural. I hope that helps.
