Why simple present english translation is inadequate and simple continuous is accepted?

why "he is coming after his father" is wrong here

I need some explanations:

He comes after his father = Er kommt nach seinem Vater? 'Er kommt seinem Vater nach' sounds to me as if the sentence is using the verb 'nachkommen', therefore 'He complies with his father'?

the verb here is "jdm. (dativ) nachkommen: to follow somebody"
