Course "Czech from English" (Phase 1)
By nueby on 2017/07/03
It looks like we are going to need until the end of July before we are ready to lock the course and hand it over to Duolingo. This probably means the start of beta in August.

This is even weirder:
In a few months I'm hoping we'll have a truly scalable system that allows us to add hundreds of languages at once.
I'd settle for much less.
Many years ago I read an article on a Finnish magazine that seemed to equate hetken päästä (after a while) to four years. Luis made his comment three years ago and we still don't have a total of one hundred courses, so I'm starting to think that article I read was written by Luis and that to him at once means in 3-4 years. It would explain Duo's other timescales as well.
They really should open up the development of these incubator courses to many many more language lovers. They'd get completed much quicker! Why doesn't this happen?
If Czech comes soon I bet we'll see a new course. I keep hoping that the lack of entrances means that they're planning something big.
I have the same feeling. Also, unlike a few other recent or pending exits, Czech will be done-done with Phase 1. No partial beta release. So there really will be a slot, so to speak.
I don't know about that. Of the last 10 times a course(s) has been added, only 4 times has it been within 2 weeks of another one exiting phase 1. And it's not because there have been more courses entering (12) than exiting (20) phase 1 during that time, or because all the courses exited on the same day (18 different weeks).
I don't know about that.
Like you, I wouldn't bet on the fact that (any) beta release is creating an "open position".
I have never seen such clear implication and the two things seem totally unrelated.
The something big, if that is the case, could have been getting Japanese into limited beta and now trying to get it to full release on the desktop. They are investing huge resources into it.
Let's hope then that they tackle it quickly so that (at least) some resources can be dedicated to other (incubator's) things.
I dunno if that's what's holding things up. Just going by Multi0Lingual4's assumption, if it's accurate, I'd think it was related to JA for EN course.
That moment when you're willing to do anything to get the course you want into the incubator, but the language you want to teach isn't that popular or requested...yet you still wish it would get in there anyways.
Also wow, that Duo art is amazing!
Just in case of doubt: it's AR-EN team's art, not mine. ;)
I would love to know the artist. I've tweeted a contrats for the team. But, I didn't know who to credit. I could go back and add it though if the artist wants me to. :)
It really pisses me off that the Hindi course is still so overdue, I've been waiting for this course for years but the guy who is developing it insists on not accepting more contributors. I give up, this course won't be ready until 2020.
They recently (2-3 weeks ago) replaced the course moderator. That hasn't translated to progress yet but maybe Soon™.
As far as I can see, they've completed a lot of new lexemes during this last week.
Have you been storing the finished and total word counts? I only have the 5/12 and today's values. The total word count went from 2693 to 705 words. Finished words went from 460 to 659. The Russian tree (that they started from) was clearly chopped off along the way.
The course's estimated completion date coincides with GoT season 7 premier. What a coincidence!
I guess they hoped, more than 1 month ago (when they gave the estimated date), to be able to make the release simultaneous to the airing but it seems unlikely they can complete the course in one more week except if they decided that the course will be far far (far) shorter than all previous courses released into beta.
Since the lead contributor is also the creator of the language itself, I suppose it would be at his discretion as to how much of the course should be released. He could always develop more of the language and work on V.2 before the release of season 8. To the best of my knowledge, there aren't any other resources out there to learn High Valyrian, so a far far (far) shorter early-release course might make sense.
Someone who is interested in it probably knows more about Valyrian resources but there isn't and in the foreseeable future won't be a language on Duolingo that doesn't already have a Memrise course. Case in point. The length may not be impressive but how much can you expect when the creator of the language said he needs to invent new words to fill a Duolingo course.
the course will be far far (far) shorter than all previous courses released into beta
34 skills, 125 lessons. Yep, pretty much :)
I think the last update was from last month
Nope, each WIU's numbers update is taken automatically each week.
