Are we able to block specific ads?
I want to keep my ads but block certain ones.
I want to keep my ads because I know that Duolingo needs to raise revenue in order to bring back our Activity Stream. I even spend time reading the ads and clicking for more information in the hope that Duo might get more money.
However, I would like to block some of the ads. Please tell me the various ways to do this.
Here are some resources people have posted elsewhere to help troubleshoot advertisements on Duolingo. I have lingoted them handsomely for borrowing them into this discussion:
The ads are from google. Maybe this can help you: Why you may see particular ads
Or maybe this: Opt out of seeing personalized ads
If you get a disturbing advertisement that you think children should not see, you can report it here
I sent it here: https://support.duolingo.com/hc/en-us/requests/new
Another way to remove advertisements and support the continued existence of Duolingo is to subscribe to Duolingo Plus. You can read more about it Here in Luis' official announcement. I don't have ads because I use the website. So, I'm not sure where people are purchasing it from. Anyone have that info?
Usagiboy7, You are just the best!!! Thank you so very much! I hope to keep my ads in line with Duolingo's principle's and guide lines :) I am willing to help out to keep Duolingo around for other people to benefit from this wonderful education and community as I and many others have already.
Have there been any other ideas discussed? I would love to get our Activity Stream back as soon as possible. Oh, I just saw your website link (oops) I will check this out :) Thanks again!
Hmm, hopefully not. Staff didn't guarantee an ad free website. But, they did say they would try to keep it to the apps. (I wish I had the link to that comment. If anyone can get it to me, I'll give them 10 lingots.) I read a comment from someone else who said they were getting website ads to too, and someone commented it had to do with a non-Duolingo browser thing. Which, I can say from experience can happen. When I first downloaded Chrome a couple of years back, I clicked on something and suddenly I had adds popping up on Duolingo and everywhere else. But, it could also be an A/B test.
To locate which test groups are active on your account (I am using Windows10, Chrome so this might be different for you), right click, then select "Element" from the menu that appears. Then, click Ctrl and F. A search box will appear. Type or paste this into it: duo.user.attributes.ab_options
You can also open your web browser, press F12 to get access to the dev console. Then type the following command to inspect the variable :
I think that was to me, Lento. (This thread is getting long lol). Thanks! I didn't even realize I was at 16 days. It's a sight shorter than my old 994, but, even that one started at 1. I don't know if I'll get this one big. I'm mostly just aiming to finish the Japanese course, which I think I'm about 2/3 through right now. The streak is offering a bit of nice encouragement to do it every day. :)
Happy Holidays Usiage! I love your festive bunny! :-) Have you seen a certain festive giraffe? Your profile page partners well with mine. Auld lang syne would help remember the people who are no longer in our lives. I wasn't sure how to message you, so I picked the first discussion I saw that I saw you in. I wish you happiness and good health for the New Year, Bunny :-)
Lento! :) My knight is shining armor! I am so happy to hear from you :) I have been getting some strange ads. There was a scary ad of Trump moving quickly from left to right with the caption, 'What will he do next?" Well that was a bit too frightening for words. Once was bad enough, but I got that one 6 times in 2 days. I just want the sort of normal ads one would see on TV or in the newspaper. I suppose we could discuss the ads we see each day and vote on whether or not they are normal ;)
That is a strange ad Lady! The last one I got said I could be a famous barefoot writer and I didn't even have to write a movie script. They must be counting on my curiosity to make me click on them. I get a lot like that here, no name brand just a strange message.
I think you are right, a good old fashioned normal ad would be better.
I've been getting that exact same ad! A lot! I didn't click on it but I do wonder how a barefoot writer is different from one who wears shoes. Also, I think writing tends to be a solitary activity. Does it not? Should it matter what one is wearing? Who would think that we would long for the days of 'a good old fashioned normal ad'? chuckle
Lento excited voice I just read the most interesting ad! :) The ad is from Zendesk Support. I feel smarter just from reading it! :) I hope you get this ad so that you can explain to me what kind of businesses would use their services and how the services are used. It seems to be like Marketing on steroids. Super Future 'stuff'. (I do believe that 'stuff'is the technical term :) I also love the beautiful graphics. I see that they have a multilingual service!
Lento, I just read an amusing ad chuckle Slack - Where work happens! Love it
The ones that I mentioned are so wonderful :) I also saw an interesting Verizon ad. It was so different than what I expected. When you push the arrow to open the ad you find all sorts of information on how to manage your google account. (?) It was fascinating though.
How can a company with no name build you a website? Who would you pay? What a mystery...
In other news, I have a friend's list!!! It is larger, more colorful and scrolling is so much easier! I'm going to go to my profile page and admire it! Happy Dance
I'm glad to see the friends list back! I've been visiting some profiles. Did you notice Jackie has lost her streak? :( I'm sure she had over a year.
A few others have lost theirs too, I wish we had a stream so we could see what's up and offer some encouragement.
I haven't clicked that arrow on the ads yet, I'll give it a try tomorrow.
I now see that Jackie is at zero on the leader board. I also wonder what happened. She was learning German for her trip to Germany with her sister. I think she is also fluent in French and Spanish. I see more and more zero's every week that I check my leader board. I think about half of the people are at zero. Last time I talked with Nina (smallstrongmouse) she seemed so lost and isolated. I have been pleasantly surprised to see that she is still working on her German. I have heard that German is such a difficult language to learn all alone. I hope we will get the Activity Stream back soon so that we are able to give each other emotional and technical support.

It's a personal choice. Yes, Duolingo might not survive, but Duolingo might also not have earned its "right to survival" by going the way of advertisements. Consumers will act in theory the way that is best for them, and Duolingo can only try to cater to that.
Dori, Have you watched the movie, 'The Sound of Music' Two lines in one of the songs are: "Nothing comes from nothing. Nothing ever could" I think this means that we get out of something what we are willing to put into it. You can't get, get, get until you give, give, give!
Well you have to consider... is "freeness" something that Duo "gives" to attract users ;)
Perhaps you would rather pay for the Rosetta Stone which has no community, activity stream or a variety of languages to choose from? Also, you need to pay for each language separately and are not able to switch from language to language unless you switch discs. I doubt that they have the technical support or the world view that Duo has. Finally Dori, no one is holding you captive. Please do not mock those of us that want to keep Duo by helping out any way we can.
Good point. I've tried Rosetta Stone. Some people like it. I liked the cultural insight pieces. But, as for the teaching language approach, it didn't keep my interest, so, I didn't end up learning much with it. I like Duolingo's dream, I like the members of Duo's staff that I've gotten to meet, I like how they designed the skill and lesson modules with the original staff built courses that paved the way for volunteer built courses ([Redacted until I have permission to share.])
Pretty much, I want to see Duolingo succeed as a business.
I don't think that you can get rid of the ads, however, I opted to not see the ads and downloaded the service AdBlockPlus. It is really helpful and you can enable and disable it on certain sites. If it does not block all of the ads, you can edit the settings to click on an ad to get rid of it. AdBlockPlus is completely free! :) https://adblockplus.org/
Thank you Victoria! :) I don't want to block all the ads because I want to have our Activity Stream back. Duolingo needs more revenue to afford the Activity Stream and the ads bring in revenue. However, I do need a way to block the ads that I find offensive. Thanks again :)
Hello Lento!! Ads are so fun!!!
Christmas was fun but hectic! :-) How many pairs of pajamas did your mom gift? What was cooked for Christmas dinner? What was baked; Christmas cookies, biscuits, pizza? You still owe me a secret crust recipe ;)
Will you ever go back to the store that had people speaking French in the back room? (How mysterious :)
I've been thinking about how some people mock Americans for speaking only English. Who would we speak another language with. Canada is English speaking except for Quebec. Mexico is very far from most of us. The only need we would have for another language would be for travel or business.
I remember being envious of Steffi for having a trip to France. Then I realized that would be closer to her than most of the U.S. to me. (I'm in Wisconsin)
Oh well, just something I've been thinking about.
Always nice to touch base with you Mr. Sunshine! :-)
Hello Lady! I got the only pair of pajamas that my mom gifted this year :) we had plenty of cookies and cake but no pizza :(
I'm very lucky to be in North Carolina, there are a lot of immigrants from Mexico here so I know a lot of folks that speak English and Spanish, four people in my family do. Plus at the zoo I meet people from all over the world. A lot people come from everywhere to our Universities also and everyone retires here. Most people here only speak one but I think I could always find someone to speak with in any language I could think of.
I haven't been back to that store yet but I plan to one day. I don't know if they still have the French lessons behind the curtain in the mysterious back room. Here is the website for the store https://www.french-nc.com it's in an old house with lots of rooms and nooks, there is no telling what goes on in there.
I wish I lived somewhere where I could just hop on a train to get to France or Italy like Steffi, maybe one day. I thought Steffi was coming back to us but it seems like duolingo just decided to re-activate accounts that users have de-activated.
Good morning Lento :-) I saw a fun ad immediately after reading your message. It's called "A Touch of Modern". This is a Turkish company that sells a wide variety of products. I love their LED wall art. I especially like the mystical celestial blue moon. I wish I could send the link to you. The way that I know how to send links does not seem to work anymore. Could you tell me the new way to send links.
I think it is strange that I no longer find the ads to be annoying. I like them now. Especially when they are as interesting as "A Touch of Modern". The ads that don't interest me no longer distract me.
I loved the link of the mysterious store that we have discussed. I especially like that I was able to see a place that you told me about. I now understand why you said, "there is no telling what goes on there". chuckle
After talking with you and Usiage I have decided to put more effort into learning Spanish. This is the only language, (other than English) that I could speak daily.
I am so happy that I still am able to touch base with you :-) Have a great day mi amigo ; )
DreamingOdelia, I'll tell a certain Giraffe you said hello. :)
As to your question:
Who would we speak another language with.
The answer is, other people in our country and visitors too! :D
Here is a list of the 6 most spoken languages in the US and how many people in the US speak each of those languages. ^_^
Hi Usiageboy, that link is interesting and informative. I'm not sure how many different languages there are in Wisconsin. I know that there are thousands of Spanish immigrants in the last couple decades. Mexican families lived a nomad life following the harvesting of crops. I remember picking cherries with them in Door County, when I was in grade school.
I don't know if any Mexican families are following the crop harvests. I do know that many farmers have been hiring them to work on the farms. Half of the people in my apartment building are Spanish and there are a couple Hmong.
I suspect that the Hmong are what the writer of that article referred to as people from Viet Nam. Actually, the U.S. and the Hmong people fought against the Vietnamese in the Vietnam War in the 60's and 70's. Churches in this area brought thousands of refugees over after the Fall of Siagon. Hmong were being systematically murdered. Families lived in refugee camps until a country would take them. One woman had lived int his building had her children split up. Four came with her to Wisconsin and four went to France. I don't think the Hmong have ever had a homeland. They live in different parts of Asia but have never had a country of their own.
The reason I said that people in the U.S. have not felt the need to learn a second language is because we can function quite well with just English. We would need to search for people to speak another language with. We are not close to other countries that have a different language.
I love the French language, but I don't have anyone to speak it with me. I hope to visit Montreal. Did you know that Montreal is the largest French speaking city in the world after Paris?
I would have people to speak Spanish with. For some reason I do not feel about Spanish the way I feel about French. I suppose I should suck it up and participate with who is here.
I've heard that there is a large German population in parts of Wisconsin. Buck has found a few pockets to talk with.
I think I am inspired by you and Lento to dive into the "beautiful mosaic" which is the United States.
Please do not reveal whether this is an option for you or not due to age, but, people who are 18 or older in Wisconsin can use the Events feature on Duolingo to find or create a language group.
Other options include looking up language groups from other sources. One of the libraries a few towns over from where I live hosted a Spanish language group that I went to 5 or so times while I had a ride. (I always made sure people knew I was going and i didn't meet up with any members by myself or tell them my number or where I lived.)
These are just a couple of ideas. Maybe do an online search your city and "French conversation".
Good luck! :)
I haven't been on duolingo for two weeks! I'm sorry I missed your 400 day Mark :( congratulations!!!
I'm getting some ads now for Silver Seniors and Our Time Dating sites. The Internet has insulted me!
It's like when rrkeagle got the ad for neck wrinkle cream.
LENTO!!! XOXOXO ;^) You haven't been on for two weeks? Where have you been? Thank you for the congratulations ;)
LOL The ads do make me chuckle sometimes. However, I do enjoy looking at the site for Modern Touch. I'm not sure how we get the ads that we get but I am happy to have this ad :)
Have you been following the discussions on Another Attempt to Communicate? I can't help but feel jealous about rrkeagle's happy marriage. That's all I will say about that... (I am thinking a lot though!)
Did you see the 2 posts that I made a few days ago? 1. Are some discussion posts blocked before they are posted? 2. Is your favorite language a guilty pleasure? I'll let you figure out which was posted first ;)
Are you watching Columbo at your mom's right now?
Happy to hear from you. I've decided to unfollow and follow to say 'Hi" from now on. I will feel like we are saying "Hi" if you do the same ;) I wish there could be a way we could turn this communication into Morris Code :)
But then I would have to learn another language. Let's see; is . .. . SOS? Am I close?
Following and unfollowing is a good way to say hi! A friend and I tried to learn Morse code in the fifth grade so we could communicate in class by tapping pencils but we gave up before we learned.
We didn't watch Columbo, we've seen them all so many times but we watched Magnum PI instead.
I haven't seen those discussions you mentioned. I thought I was supposed to get notifications from Another Attempt To Communicate but I haven't got any :( I'll see if I can find it.
I finally found the that one discussion but it's hard to read now, duolingo doesn't like my old iPad or my old computer. I'll read it tomorrow.
I can't get to rrkeagle's profile but have you seen Jackie's profile picture lately!? I think she's been editing her picture to change her hair color, it looks nice. It was purple a few months ago and one time she had a picture of herself and some guy cheek to cheek. It was only there a few days though, I wish we had activity streams so I could ask her about it.
I HAVE seen Jackie's profile! Her picture is so dramatic :) I think her sister and her have taken their trip to Germany. Speaking of Jackie, when is your birthday?
I'm not talking about rrkeagle's profile. I was referring to her last discussion post called "Another Attempt to Communicate". You told me to go to this posting to help her celebrate her streak. Theron, you and I congratulated her. I gave her fireworks :)
Lento, if you found one of my discussions, you'll be able to find the other one. It is within 10 posts of the other one. How many posts are listed before they drift off into the Land of Discussions Past?
I've been thinking that I would like you to be my coach. You seem to have a nice rhythm to language learning. I feel a bit adrift without the Activity Stream to help me feel connected to a language learning community. We could be a community of 2.
I am still wondering what has kept you off Duo for two weeks... Anyway, I hope that you and your family are well :^)
well since I didn't know there were ads I fell surprised. I always thought Doulingo was a free site and only used for educational purposes. I never knew it was a site for profit too. well, I am partially happy for not seeing ads because it annoys me to click the x but I would click them for the good of Doulingo.
