When will Finnish be available for English speakers?

Hello!

I am eager to learn Finnish! When will Duolingo/community start developing a language course in Finnish?

Kind regards

Finnish is one of the most requested languages on Duolingo along with Latin, Hindi and Icelandic. Duolingo have said that it will eventually be added, however, there have not been any talks about it being available soon. I'd really love Finnish to be on Duo too and all the attention it gets the better. : )

But even with all that talk about Finnish, it's not in the incubator yet. And that means that when it eventually gets there, it'll be another year or so until the course is complete. So, I wouldn't really get my hopes up yet.

I'm going to say at least two years. Think about it; Finnish isn't even in the first phase yet. Then, when it is in that phase, it will usually take the course creators about a year (or a year and a half) to complete the course. So, my prediction is that we may get Finnish late 2019 or early 2020.

P.S I would love to see whether my prediction is correct, so I am going to put the date that I wrote this now ---> (11th July, 2017)

Not if they rush it like they did Swahili, Japanese, and now Korean.

There are quite a few of us learners who would like to see Finnish here, and also quite a few Finns who have volunteered to help build a course. Unfortunately, until Duolingo decides that it's the right time to start building it, there's nothing more we can do.

This is the most upvoted discussion about Finnish here. You can add your vote to support our cause. There is also a Facebook group.

If you want to start learning, Zzzzz... kindly makes Slow Finnish lessons for us here in the discussions. I also put some more Finnish resources here.

General language learning sites that I found helpful: Memrise (flashcards with spaced repetition, some "courses" have whole sentences), Clozemaster (fill in a word into sentence), Mondly (a bit like Duo but without spaced repetition), Readlang (helps read foreign websites, makes flashcards out of encountered words).

The biggest problem with Finnish is the grammar.

Slow Finnish (with the accompanying Memrise course) introduces it quite nicely. Works for me.

The Facebook Duolingo Finnish link seems to be broken.

It used to work. :( I'm not on facebook so I can't check if they changed it to private or gave up or whatever.

Here is a post for adding a language you're interested in having added to DL: https://www.duolingo.com/comment/15014194 If you read through it, there is a link where you can upvote for adding Finnish. :)

Good luck with that. They had professors offer to do some courses and they were rejected or never responded to.

For now you can use other websites/apps, such as memrise.

Here's a course for Finnish. It cost monthly, but hey, it's a Finnish course and there's not many out there. Plus, it has a 2 week trial. http://www.worddive.com/en/learn-finnish#courses

I've volunteered already for the Finnish Course. I'm a native Finnish speaker and I've spoken Finnish all of my short life.
