Word Count

How is it that words get added to the word count even though no new words (that I know of) have been learned? (i.e. only practiced)

Sometimes practice can reveal hidden words that did not appear in the original lesson.

They're different forms (e.g. verb conjugations, plurals) of the words you've come across in the lessons. Note that the Words tab is notoriously buggy, and sometimes it also just acts totally weird.

I have 42,894 XP in French, well past level 25, and two days ago my word count jumped from 2,919 to 2,922. Either those three words have been there all along and took a long, long time to appear in a lesson, or they were more recently added to the lessons, or Duolingo just started giving credit for practicing them.
