Completed Lessons Aren't Saving

Hello,

I'm working through the Japanese from English courses in the Android App, and as of this afternoon lessons that I have successfully completed aren't saving, which is preventing me from moving forward. It is multiple lessons that are having this problem, as I have also attempted to strengthen past lessons with the same results (not saving as full strength). It will let me go through the entire lesson without error, but after exiting back to the main screen nothing changes.

I uninstalled and reinstalled the problem continues. I also tried switching back and forth between languages, no change.

Thank you for taking the time to look at this!

Esuta

There have been made updates (only) to the server backend code, right?

Yesterday and today I was using Android app V3.51.2 for EN-PT and it was working without glitches (I double / triple checked on web interface my collected XPs / day).

If the app would be related (too), can you please include what version also contains the lesson/sync bug and update the spec/readme (CHANGELOG) so we still know that in the future if we might have to install apk packages from archive sites?

What updated app version do we have to get to have a reliable version finish lessons and be able to sync lesson/skills/tree/XPs to the online server?

Thanks.

I am also having this problem, and also with Japanese for English.

I wonder if this same issue happened two days ago, as well, because my streak got killed (and I could have sworn I did my daily lessons that day) and the app shook me down for a $3 micropayment to "repair" it; now it looks like that's for naught, because my "streak" is going to die again-- despite the fact that, in the course of rebooting my phone, reinstalling the app, etc. to try and get it to record my results, I've done fifteen or twenty reviews in a row today. So now I'm wondering if my memory isn't faulty, after all, and this same problem was why my streak died two days ago. Maybe I should be calling for a refund of that micropayment?

Speaking as a developer, without knowing anything about the app's structure, it looks like the app is having trouble getting any data to or from Duolingo's servers, because about every third time I open it, the app thinks I'm logging in for the first time and asks what language I want to learn, but then suddenly remembers what lessons I've had etc. So it seems like whatever API is being used to retrieve my user data is only working intermittently, causing the phone app to momentarily forget who I am because the data didn't come back. And the API that records new data whenever I take a lesson or whatever isn't working at all, hence why I can earn 200-ish XP tonight and still be at 0 XP for the day.

To add insult to injury, when I came here to write this comment I couldn't use any part of the website, because every page here automatically replaces itself on page load with a full-page popover that says "Japanese for English isn't available on the web yet. Do you want to learn another language while you wait?", which makes sense if I'm trying to take lessons, but much less sense if I'm trying to click through to the troubleshooting forums or whatever. In order to get through to this page and post this comment, I had to sign up for Spanish and switch to it, to stop that popover from taking over every single page. That seems like a really silly UI problem to have.

I have tested and have found that the website version still seems to be properly updating completion data so I would recommend doing lessons on that until they fix it.

For the record, I have also been having trouble with the Android version not recording progress for my Swedish lessons.

I know that the web version is working, but the app is much easier to use.

Same problem here. I'm learning Hebrew on Android. I have completed the same lesson twice, and nothing was saved. I'll try the web version.

This is suddenly happening to me on my Swedish lessons.I have completed more than 400 consecutive days successfully with the same computer and the same connections and OS. I have made no changes with ad-ons or anything else. It just suddenly started happening. The OS is Windows 10. I have been able to work around the problem by using my iPad, which still is giving me credit. But, while this works, it deprives me of the very valuable discussion option at the end of each exercise that comes with using the PC. I filed a PC bug report a couple of days ago. I haven't had a response. It's hard to beef when the program is free and so damned good with terrific moderators, but this really gets in the way of continuing to learn.

@GaryAxelson

What browser? What version?

Browsers most times are set to "auto-update", so it could be related to this.

Do you see any JS error in the browser console when you do the lessons and press the check/continue button?

In Firefox you can open the console with the Ctrl + Shift + K / F12 hotkey.

Have you included all relevant informations in your bug report?

Browser is Google Chrome. No JS errors that I found. Lessons run smoothly, with quick responses when I click check or continue. The problem comes at the end after I've finished the last response. Instead of the usual screen showing completion and 10 new XPs, there is a very long pause - maybe a couple of minutes - before it takes me to the main page of the program. And the progress circle fails to show that I've passed the segment and gotten credit. My version of Google Chrome is: "Version 72.0.3626.119 (Official Build) (64-bit)." Now I just did see an error code when I went to check the version, but I'm not computer savvy enough to know what to do about it: "An error occurred while checking for updates: Update check failed to start (error code 4: 0xA0430817 -- system level)."

Thomas - after I wrote the above a bit ago I did what I should have tried from the beginning. I rebooted my PC. Doh! I checked Google again, it asked me to approve the update and I did. I tried a DuoLingo Swedish exercise and had no further problem. You were right about the auto update issue. Since I hadn't made any changes it hadn't occurred to me. Sorry to take your time but for anyone else on this string, follow Thomas' advice and check browser auto update and try a reboot.
