Me too! I understand why, bcuz a Japanese person would understand the implied question since 何 is in there but Duo is usually such a stickler for it I found it odd

You can just type おととし then press spacebar to convert it to kanji. For おととし it should only give you one suggestion in the pop-up conversion list. ^^

とし is the Japanese word for "year", and it's in the sentence.
